This is an exciting opportunity to support the leadership of a busy Payroll and Pensions team as the University transitions to a new HR/Payroll platform. You will have a relevant payroll qualification, extensive payroll experience and experience of managing staff. You will be responsible for helping to ensure all policies, processes and procedures relating to payroll and employment tax are reviewed and maintained in line with legislative changes, support the Payroll Officer in providing leadership to the team and be one of the key subject matter experts in all aspects of payroll, employment tax, national insurance and other associated taxes. You will be enthusiastic and committed to ensuring the service provided is accurate, efficient and customer focused, engaging with the University community to build knowledge and support on payroll related activities.

You will have significant experience in payroll administration in order to provide a professional and efficient service to approximately 4,000 salaried employees in addition to a flexible cohort. Working to tight deadlines whilst ensuring compliance with legislation and maintaining accuracy levels is essential. Adopting a proactive approach, you will identify areas for improvement and work collaboratively under the directions of the Payroll Officer and wider Payroll and Pensions team as well as other key stakeholders to implement change.

Job Description

To help lead and deliver a comprehensive payroll service to the University, ensuring timely and accurate payments, legal compliance, strong controls and in conjunction with the Finance Helpdesk, excellent customer service

You will be responsible for helping to ensure all policies, processes and procedures relating to payroll and employment tax are reviewed and maintained in line with legislative changes, support the Assistant Payroll Manager in providing support to the Payroll and Pensions team and be one of the key subject matter experts in all aspects of payroll, employment tax, national insurance and other associated taxes.

Responsible for identifying areas for process improvement including the customer experience and engaging with the University community to build knowledge and support on payroll related activities. Assisting with any projects relating to payroll as allocated by the Assistant Payroll Manager

Main Responsibilities:

  • To help in the overall workload of the payroll team to ensure prompt and accurate processing of the University payroll.
  • To have working knowledge of statutory regulations and University policies in order to ensure University Payroll system is configured to enable the correct calculation of payments and deductions.
  • To ensure compliance with internal controls and procedures in order to avoid breaches of University policies and HMRC regulations relating to pay and associated issues.
  • To ensure correct payments are made and appropriate information is provided to, HMRC and other statutory bodies within specified timescales
  • To act as one of the University???s specialists in all matters relating to payroll (e.g. PAYE, RTI, etc.) drafting policies and contributing to policy development as appropriate.
  • To assist development and enhancement of the payroll system by collaborating with colleagues to continuously review processes and working practices to ensure the University maintains an up to date, effective and efficient service.
  • To provide expert advice and information regarding certain payroll matters (e.g. PAYE regulations), flagging issues to Line Manager for further consideration.
  • Undertake any other appropriate duties within the Finance Directorate as may be required from time to time, commensurate with grade
