One of our key accounts has an opening for an experienced Oracle DBA engineer to join their Derby based team. The successful candidate will be experienced in MariaDB, Cassandra with ODA skills, must be able to work onsite and already hold or be capable of achieving UK security clearance.

Essential Job Functions

  • Monitors database activity ensuring that they are:
    • Available; every effort should be made to ensure that databases are up and running and available during their operating hours for the users
    • Secure; only those authorised are permitted access and only to the content that is pertinent to their roles
    • Recoverable; regular backups must be taken to ensure that in the event of disaster, the data can be recovered/recreated and allow the service to resume as normal
    • Error free; any issues that impact functionality, data integrity or data access must be identified and resolved
    • Performant; any bottlenecks that negatively impact database performance must be identified, escalated, and resolved. This potentially will require collaborating with multiple teams such as Wintel, Linux, storage and network teams
  • Develop tools to aid with:
    • Event monitoring; where issues have been identified and no available tooling is able to provide monitoring of the event the DBA will aid in developing appropriate tools to automate identifying reoccurring or similar issues so they can be rectified quickly
    • Capacity monitoring/planning; using both available and develop new tooling to periodically record CPU, memory usage and disk usage. Then use the meta data to plan future resource needs based on historical trends
  • Plan and implement new database installations which incorporating DXC, vendor best practice and client requirements
  • Plan and implement major release databases upgrades and periodic patching schedules
  • Utilises standard corporate tools to managed incidents, problem records and changes.

Basic Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, management information systems, or related field preferred
  • Three or more years of experience in Oracle/MS SQL database design and/or maintenance
  • MariaDB
  • CassandraDB
  • Oracle ODA
  • Oracle Cloud technology
  • Experience working with software installation/upgrading/patching procedures
  • Experience with various operating systems such as Windows, Linux and UNIX
  • Experience working with performance modelling and benchmarking skills with regards to relational databases

  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Good programming/scripting skills for database management and general software
  • Good communication skills for providing documentation to support personnel, customers, and managers
  • Good leadership skills to guide and mentor the work of less experienced personnel
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Ability to anticipate problems and take decisive action

Work Environment

  • Predominately virtual working with site attendance as part of a team rotation
  • May require evening or weekend work
  • Out of hours on-call in a team rotation
