The Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA) finds and funds exploitable innovations to support UK Defence and Security mission quickly and effectively, and generating UK prosperity.

DASA is a relatively new organisation with a very high profile across Government. We operate in a complex, fast-paced environment in which there are a large number of partners, suppliers and customers.

DASA has four teams, Outreach, Operations, Partnership & Impact and Support Services.

We are looking for someone who can help influence, shape and lead delivery of our portfolio of themed work for defence customers.

Job description

In this role you will:

  • Lead engagement with, and management of, relationships with defence customers and partners to support awareness of DASA capabilities, find potential opportunities for DASA to inject and drive innovation.
  • Influence and negotiate with senior budget holders regarding investment in innovation for the purposes of defence.
  • Shape the defence portfolio through working up potential defence themes for the Triage Panel that align with our mission and vision, prioritisation principles and target portfolio shape, and which have associated funding and end user support.
  • Lead delivery of DASA’s agreed defence portfolio from triage to service development through to award of contract, with good attention to detail ensuring the DASA service is led to time, cost and quality, raising risks and issues as required.
  • On occasion, work with Other Government Departments to gather support for shared opportunities.
  • Line manage, motivate and develop a team of high performing Delivery Managers and Associate Delivery Managers that will support portfolio delivery.
  • Provide appropriate monitoring and reporting on the portfolio as required.
  • Gather knowledge from, and identify and implement improvements in, current DASA Operations processes.
  • Work in partnership with wider DASA including
  • Work in partnership with Dstl’s enabling services
  • Provide input to the strategic direction of the Operations Team via the Operations Lead.
  • Deputise for the Operations Lead where appropriate

Person specification

We are looking for someone who has:

  • Experience of working in a customer facing role with the curiosity to explore customer challenges.
  • A passion for innovation; wanting to help customers quickly and effectively find solutions to meet their most pressing challenges, including an ability to spot areas of mutual interest across customers, making the linkages and avoiding duplication.
  • The people skills to develop good working relationships with Government partners across organisations boundaries including handling complex and sensitive relationships. This will include engagement with the wider defence innovation ecosystem including the Defence Innovation Unit and Front Line Commands Innovation Hubs, as well as with the expert assessors, moderators, technical partners and project managers who help inform the down-selection of successful proposals and deliver contracted proposals.
  • The leaderships skills and drive to deliver DASA’s defence portfolio using tools such as competitions, events or other services to meet customer requirements.
  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail to ensure that work is well planned, coordinated with relevant partners and delivered to a high quality.
  • Commercial awareness to support Dstl Commercial Services to place timely contracts with successful suppliers and Project Management awareness to assist handovers of identified solutions to the next stage of the exploitation journey.
  • Good reflective and creative skills to gather knowledge, identify lessons, challenge current norms and contribute to development of novel service offerings.
  • Flexibility, adaptability to change and working at pace to short deadlines to deliver promised outcomes as well as the ability to balance delivery of longer term tasks with quick-turnaround requests.
  • Competence as a line manager, but is also a team player and will develop the team strategy.

Our work in defence, security and intelligence requires our employees to be UK Nationals who are able to gain a high level of security clearance to undertake the projects we are involved in to protect us from security threats. This role will require full UK security clearance and you should have resided in the UK for the past 5 years. For some roles Developed Vetting will also be required, in this case you should have resided in the UK for the past 10 years.
