Make a Difference to Society

At Babcock we're working to create a safe and secure world, together, and if you join us, you can play your part as a Principal Safety Case Engineer to lead the safety case development for the roll out of advanced modular reactors in the UK, as part of our exciting Clean Energy business within Cavendish Nuclear, a wholly owned subsidiary of Babcock International Group.

Cavendish Nuclear

As a leader within the UK nuclear industry, Cavendish Nuclear provides a comprehensive range of critical nuclear solutions in clean energy, defence and civil new build and decommissioning projects. Together, we're innovating to make nuclear safer, faster and cost-effective across the nuclear energy life cycle. Your career with us could take you anywhere within Babcock International Group - from Canada, the USA to Japan. Work with us to create a safe and secure world, together.

The role

The difference our new Principal Safety Case Engineer will make

As a Principal Safety Case Engineer, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary - you will make a case to secure the deployment of the UK's first advanced modular reactor in the UK. We expect you are someone who relishes the opportunity to be the person who develops the safety case from its very beginnings to the day when the UKs first advanced modular reactor goes live.

Day to day, you will coordinate the development of the safety case whilst developing a team and going onto to support their career development, our ambitious diversity targets and championing our Babcock Principles.

We are looking for someone who wants to collaborate with us and our partners on this challenging and rewarding journey to Net Zero and make a positive impact on our business, the nuclear sector and society.

You will interface with both internal and external stakeholders ensuring a robust safety case is developed to support a Generic Design Application (GDA) and, following GDA, the development of the safety case into site-specific Pre-Construction Safety Reports for reactor deployment. Achievement of these key project milestones can only be realised by developing a trusted, robust, and respected relationship with the regulators through open and transparent engagement, setting clear expectations and delivering on our commitments.

As an experienced Principal Safety Case Engineer, you will be able to develop and implement the required processes and methodologies to support safety case development and management to meet all regulatory requirements and expectations.

Your people skills will be exercised everyday as you co-ordinate with the wider team to ensure Safety Case integration with Environmental and Security assessments, ensuring alignment with the wider deployment project. And your management skills will be brought to bear as you manage the Safety Case delivery team, delivering to quality, programme and budgetary expectations.

At Cavendish Nuclear and Babcock, we have a history of helping talent go far. With our track record of innovation, you'll continually develop your knowledge and expertise - the role and timescales of the project will allow plenty of latitude for career development.

We offer flexible working to give people more options to better integrate their work and personal life, whilst ensuring that business needs are met.

Essential experience

• You will bring deep knowledge and understanding of UK nuclear regulation and Safety Case development and be known for being a 'change agent'
• You will be highly motivated, customer and delivery focussed individual with exceptional leadership and management skills.
• You will have substantial demonstrable competence: continuous professional development, post degree/qualification covering a range of engineering and/or technical topics and demonstrable people leadership experience.

Desirable experience

• Experience of previous GDA and/or new build experience preferred but not a necessity.
