Would you like to work within a varied and interesting role supporting a wide range of products for both defence and commercial sectors? We currently expanding the team and have a vacancy for a Chemistry Specialist at our site in Great Baddow, Essex.

As a Chemistry Specialist, you will be working as part of a multidisciplinary team within the BAE Systems Product Assurance Response Centre (PARC). PARC activities include the provision of rapid technical troubleshooting services and other technical advice relating to components, production processes, and environmental issues. The unit's activities support a broad range of industrial operations including; avionics, sensors, shipbuilding, aircraft manufacture, sonar systems, radar and energetic materials systems. The rapid resolution of technical issues in PARC is paramount in ensuring high performance, quality, value and competitiveness throughout BAE Systems and other customers.

Your main responsibilities as a Chemistry Specialist will involve:

  • Providing rapid troubleshooting and failure analysis service relating to components, production and processes as part of the PARC team
  • Providing competent chemistry advice in response to enquiries encouraged from customers to assist in production of products 'right first time'.
  • Ensuring high performance, quality, value, and competitiveness throughout BAE Systems
  • Use of test and analytical equipment to ensure problems are solved in a timely fashion.
  • Preparing technical proposals, technical reports, test procedures, process specifications and other product documentation
  • Liaising with both internal and external customers, including travel and visits to other business unit sites as part of the rapid response service
  • Supporting enquiries arising from legislation pertinent to Product Environmental Safety and Health and Safety.

Your skills and qualifications as a Chemistry Specialist:

Essential:

  • Post-graduate level qualification (or equivalent with experience) in Chemistry.
  • Possesses excellent communication skills, both written and verbal; in particular report writing to a high standard, but concise.
  • Ability to use standard programmes for document and spreadsheet preparation.
  • Is able to work independently without close supervision when required and also unafraid to request advice when it is needed.
  • An ability to consistently comply with strict protocols and procedures when this is required

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of modern analytical techniques e.g. SEM / EDX, XRF, 3D X-Ray/ CT, DSC/TGA, FTIR, TMA, DMA, NMR (In-house training will be provided where that is required)
  • Good knowledge of organic chemistry and demonstration of practical chemical ability.
  • Knowledge of materials properties, selection, processing and testing, ideally encompassing polymers, metals, ceramics and composites, adhesives and surface finishes and coatings.
  • Membership of a recognised professional institution such as Royal Society of Chemistry (the company provides support to gain professional status).
  • A history of working in a production environment.

You will possess a flexible and adaptable approach to enable you to take on enquiries that are not matched to your specific academic background but where you are able to learn about a topic through research and reasonably become knowledgeable. You will be prepared to listen to the opinions and advice of others without any preconceptions of their ability and contribute your views clearly.

Security Clearance:

Only those with the permanent and unrestricted right to live and work in the UK will be considered for a position within BAE Systems Digital Intelligence.
