Job description for SDA Lead Systems Engineer

The SDA have an exciting opportunity for an experienced systems integration engineering professional to join our team. You will integrate with a team of highly skilled professionals, getting up-close and personal with complex submarine systems, overseeing engineering challenges unique to this industry whilst significantly impacting project/programme success.

As senior member of our team, you’ll have the opportunity to be an authority on weapon system integration and engineering coordination of this complex capability. You will operate at deputy project chief engineer level, covering in-service and test documentation services to the Vanguard and Dreadnought submarine build programme. Due to the nature of these programmes, working with stakeholders is critical to success. You will therefore be required to uphold strong and productive relationships with the US Government through the Polaris Sales Agreement and be the Intelligent Customer with UK Industry Partners within the Strategic Weapon Enterprise.

  Responsibilities for SDA Lead Systems Engineer

The post has a small but capable team of circa 20 staff assigned to deliver and control engineering management activities, configuration change management and specialist engineering support services, as well as undertake whole weapon system integration and testing oversight on-board submarines. In joining, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Provide support and oversight to all Strategic Weapon System and Strategic Weapon Support System maintenance activities on Vanguard in-service submarines.
  • Manage the Test, Measurement and Diagnostic Equipment programme via liaison with key stakeholder, associated UK Industry Partners and Royal Navy personnel
  • Provide support to and oversight of the Document Control Centre responsible for the receipt, control, issue and dispatch of US and UK Strategic Weapons System documentation to operators
  • Co-ordinate several information exchange and compliance activities to ensure operation of the Strategic Weapon Enterprise is in accordance with the Polaris Sales Agreement
  • Provide strategic direction and assurance to the management of configuration change management for both Vanguard, Dreadnought build, and UK Facilities in accordance with US/UK technical agreement and departmental best practice in support of UK legislation.

  Person Specification

To be successful with your application, you’ll need to show that you meet the following essential criteria:

  • Member of a relevant Professional Engineering/Science Institute or equivalent body; holding or able to confirm you are seeking chartered status
  • Relevant Level 6 (or higher) qualification or equivalent experience.
  • Experience of providing technical advice at a senior level and leading the delivery of successful engineering outcomes in multidisciplinary projects.
  • Wide ranging depth and breadth of technical experience in own specialism with knowledge and application of Systems Engineering approaches.
