Location: Flexible (regular travel to HMP Fosse Way)

Salary: £39,259 per annum

HMP Fosse Way is a brand new, state of the art prison designed to focus on the rehabilitation of lower risk prisoners and their reintegration back into society. Fully opening in May 2023, Serco will operate and maintain the prison, providing a secure, safe and decent environment that will reduce re-offending through risk management, education, employment, respect, equality and inclusion.

At the heart of the prison will be an enormous industries and work operation, offering heavy and light workshops with associated training classrooms. We will be setting up a diverse portfolio of in-house, commercial, not-for-profit and vocational training partners, with committed funding for social enterprises. We therefore now have a unique opportunity available to be the Fosse Way Industries Business Manager. This is a critical role, because it will set up and launch the businesses in each of the workshops - selecting partners, agreeing commercial arrangements, ensuring both the quality of work, training, and qualifications available to prisoners (to enable them to secure meaningful employment on release), but also the commercial sustainability of each enterprise.

As Industries Business Manager, you'll have overall responsibility for setting up and subsequently running the commercial activities and will ensure that during the pre-opening phase, workshops open in line with the opening and ramp up of the prison. Working with workshop partners, developing relationships, and identifying new partners, you'll create sustainable commercial models that deliver affordable and meaningful work for prisoners, including liaison with commercial partners and engagement with external organisations to bolster the industries' function. This is an incredibly exciting opportunity because you will have the chance to influence what happens in the prison and what purposeful work activities we deliver to the prisoners. In effect you will be setting up and running up to 28 different businesses, in partnership with some global brands and blue chips.

Whilst this is a demanding role with a broad range of principal duties and objectives, you won't be doing it alone. You'll be working with a team of supportive colleagues who are passionate about the work we do and live by our values of Care, Trust, Innovation and Pride.

What you will need to do the role

Key to success in the role will be your ability to develop relationships with key potential partners, to negotiate financial and commercial arrangements, and to seek to continuously improve arrangements so that the operations are sustainable commercially.

If you have experience in enterprise set up and development or have graduated in the fields of Business Management/Studies or Economics/Finance/Accounting, allied to innate entrepreneurial and problem-solving flair, this may be the role for you. You do not necessarily need experience in a prison industries environment, rather we are looking for someone with a firm grasp of financial, commercial & P&L principles.
