Job Details

Join us as a Senior Applications Support Analyst and help keep the country safe. Whether you’re managing middleware or resolving issues, your work will support Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) – the team that protects the UK.

Every day, CTP relies on a wide range of technology to fulfil its vital role. Your task will be to support all applications, learning new skills as you go.

Based at the National Customer Service Centre (CSC), you’ll tackle incidents, service requests, problems and changes, for operational, business as usual and CTP project applications. As part of a 2nd line support function you’ll be a point of escalation, taking every incident through to resolution according to best practice.

When you’re not tackling problems, you’ll be monitoring web servers, applications servers, log files, disk space, MS-SQL databases and other components. We’ll look to you to maintain middleware (Active Directory, ASP, .NET) and write reports using PowerShell, JavaScript, HTML and other tools. At this level, you’ll also be a mentor for more junior analysts – a great opportunity to develop coaching and leadership skills. You should therefore be an experienced professional with an organised approach and strong technical talents.

We’re looking for a good grasp of application design and management, and natural problem-solving ability. You should be degree-qualified (or equivalent), and able to write complex SQL queries.

Above all, you must be flexible and highly focused on customers, with excellent communication skills. It’s important you’re confident dealing with stakeholders, and prepared to work on-call and travel to other sites.

Now more than ever is the time to join the Met Police. We want our team to be representative of our country and are looking to recruit people who understand and reflect the diverse communities we engage with every day.

Besides the rewarding nature of the job itself, a competitive salary and a Civil Service pension, you'll also benefit from excellent career and professional development. If you’re looking to progress, this is an outstanding opportunity.

Key Tasks

  • Working within a service team monitoring components such as web servers, applications servers, log files, disk space and MS-SQL databases.
  • A point of escalation for all Application related issues within the Application Support team.
  • Working as part of a second line support function following incident management through to incident resolution. Natural problem solving with ability to apply previous experience to new problems working towards route cause analysis.
  • Ensuring the entire application estate aligns within Application Lifecycle Management.
  • Working with third party suppliers, stakeholders and departmental ICT teams to help deliver patch/release of applications while coordinating vendor support.
  • Understanding of ITIL process, incident management, change management and problem management including working to strict SLAs.
  • Maintaining middleware such as; IIS, MS-SQL Server, Active Directory, ASP and. NET, including troubleshooting, performance tuning, basic queries and resolving bottlenecks.
  • Report writing with tools such as PowerShell, JavaScript, HTML and SQL.
  • Ownership of application backup, restores and the Application Disaster Recovery (DR) process.
  • Daily support of COTS and WEB based software applications with an emphasis on the ability to problem solve. Creating knowledge base articles and up-skilling other members of the team following resolution.
  • Ability to understand business logic, technical tools and be an analytic thinker.
  • Strong customer focus – understanding the needs of the internal and external customer and keeping them in mind when taking actions or making decisions. Able to attend Senior User groups nationally on behalf of the CSC and articulate complex technical issues to both peers and non-technical staff.
  • Expectation to handle low level disciplinary issues within the Applications and Data Team and escalate to the National Application and Data Manager when required.
