Seeing is believing. And that’s the only way you’ll really get to know about our sophisticated technologies and how we’re using them to fight crime in the capital. We don’t say much, for obvious reasons, but suffice to say that we’re leading advancements in emerging technologies to deliver bespoke electronic and ICT solutions in specialist areas to make London safer.

This is an outstanding opportunity for an experienced senior electronics engineering manager, with hands on electronic experience, to work in an exciting engineering and science environment, offering excellent employee benefits and delivering operational technology solutions to make London safer.

The Technology, Research and Innovation (TRI) team keeps the Met at the cutting-edge of tech. Its work is highly innovative and no two projects are ever the same. Some initiatives involve undertaking research with academia or exploring new off-the-shelf technologies. Others involve modifying commercially available products, or creating a whole new solution from scratch.

Delivery of these solutions involves the complete lifecycle from developing requirements with customers, producing design solutions and turning these designs into a fully functional product or system for operational use.

As Head of Electronics Systems Development, you will provide leadership to an Electronics Development Team to enable them to effectively deliver bespoke electronic products and systems fit for operational use in the field. This will involve you using all of your previous hands-on electronics development and engineering skills to effectively steer and manage the team to successfully deliver solutions on time to meet operational deadlines.

Fundamental to this role is the ability to find solutions to complex operational problems in an innovative way. You will draw upon a wide range of science and engineering related disciplines to address the needs of frontline officers. You will take their operational requirements, identify potential electronic solutions, working with the senior technologist and development managers, and steering the electronics team to deliver robust solutions to meet operational deadlines.

A typical day, may include engaging with MPS operational officers, capturing and documenting requirements, meeting with suppliers and partner agencies, planning a programme of electronic development projects, running project meetings, conducting design reviews, and briefing or writing on the progress of projects

As Head of Electronics Systems Development, you will be working with a wide range of stakeholders and will need to assess and adapt to each type of audience. You will be someone who can readily engage and win support of others. You will be working with some of the UK’s top suppliers and highly experienced electronic engineers in your team, so you will need to be able to communicate at their technical level. Maintaining momentum on projects is essential in order to keep the operational customers focused. You will need to think of ways to keep their commitment throughout the development lifecycle. You will have already demonstrated exceptional talent in your career.
