Investigations are a major part of police work and can sometimes be particularly disturbing, especially in areas such as child protection, domestic abuse and hate crime. This role within Specialist Protection Services will require close contact with both offenders, such as registered sex offenders and with victims.

As well as conducting complex investigations, the role also involves gathering and reviewing evidence, liaising and working in partnership with other agencies and preparing files and submissions for use in court, so as well as having a good standard of written and spoken English, it's also important to be accurate and have an eye for detail. Being able to speak an additional language that is reflective of GMP's communities will also be an advantage

Given the kinds of issues you'll be involved in investigating, it's vital that you have the capability to manage and deal with what can often be distressing information and situations. So, you'll already have experience of conducting and managing difficult situations, using sensitivity, tact and empathy. You'll need to be resilient too as there's a real chance that you'll be regularly exposed to emotionally challenging situations.

Key to the role is your ability to deal effectively, calmly and sensitively with a broad range of people, from a variety of backgrounds. No case is ever the same, and you'll have to use your judgement and initiative on a day to day basis to assess risk and ensure the appropriate action is taken.

You'll also be involved in developing intelligence by liaising with other departments in GMP and with external agencies in order to collect or disseminate information or gain assistance with particular cases. This requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to get to the detail required quickly and competently.

You'll have a really good working knowledge of IT and the internet as you'll be using a range of systems to conduct research, interrogate and update information, as well as preparing reports and pulling together intelligence and briefing packs.

Knowledge of local safeguarding procedures in relation to children, the Sexual Offences Act 2003 and the criminal law in relation to sexual exploitation, sexual offences, child neglect and violence against the person would be an advantage, as would an understanding of data protection issues and Human Rights legislation.

An important part of the role will be managing and working closely with individual sex offenders, with responsibility for reviewing and assessing the risk they pose within the community.

Although you'll be based in a particular location, we need you to be sufficiently flexible to be able to regularly travel to locations across GMP. You must therefore, hold a full UK driving licence and have use of appropriate transport. Due to the nature of the work, you must also be prepared to work outside of normal hours when required.

Training for these posts will take place at Nexus House but you may be posted to either Bolton, Wigan, Salford or Nexus House.
