Although better placed to develop economically and socially as a result of opening our international airport in 2017, we are not at the stage of self-sufficiency and therefore remain dependent on UK government aid. The St Helena Police Service comprises of a Chief of Police, a Detective Chief Inspector, two Inspectors, five Sergeants and 20 Constables.

Sometimes acting as Custody Officer, your duties will include instigating investigations, crime scene management, Events and Licensing planning, Community Policing and being part of the Sergeants on-call rota. Preparing prosecution files as well as being a ‘gatekeeper’ for files, you will fulfil disclosure obligation under CPIA and help to manage operational resources. As you mentor officers and assist in building capability and capacity, you will undertake training needs analysis and develop training plans.

You are accredited PIP1 trained or equivalent (or higher). Qualified and with operational experience at Sergeant level, you have acted as Custody Officer and have broad policing experience in various operational environments. You have practical knowledge and understanding of current policing challenges, efficiency and diversity issues, having applied the National Decision Model in operational situations. You identify, analyse, and manage risk to inform balanced, proportionate evidenced-based decisions. Able to review and assess your own, individual and team performance against expected standards, you can give objective and effective feedback for corrective actions.

In addition, you must demonstrate our core values of fairness, integrity and teamwork and use your diverse expertise and experiences to ensure your time on the Island has the broadest benefit to St Helena.  As an officer funded through the Technical Co-Operation Programme you will be expected to share your knowledge and skills beyond the workplace contributing to workforce, community and capacity development in St Helena.

The island of St Helena is an internally self-governing Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom located in the South Atlantic approximately 4,000 miles from the UK.  The Government comprises a Governor (who is appointed by the Crown) an Executive Council, which has the general control and direction of Government, and a Legislative Council.  The Governor retains responsibility for internal security, external affairs, defence, the public service, finance and shipping.

The island’s population is around 4,500 and it has a typical small island economy with a high import dependency, a narrow economic base, a large public sector (around 790 staff), and significant outward labour migration.  St Helena receives UK Government financial assistance to support recurrent and capital expenditure as part of their obligation to ensure that the reasonable needs of the population are met.
