Who we are looking for?

We are looking for a Radioactive Waste Engineer to provide waste management expertise in support of the characterisation, processing, sentencing and packaging of radioactive Intermediate Level Waste (ILW), Low Level Waste (LLW) and Out of Scope waste from Nuclear Submarine Dismantling Projects (SDP) at Rosyth.

This will include provision of advice and guidance to waste operations to enable timely treatment and/or disposal of radioactive waste. The development and implementation of relevant processes and procedures, and ensuring compliance with licences and permits relating to radioactive waste - including on the topics of Best Practicable Means (BPM), transport and disposal.

This is a site-based role at Rosyth with ongoing presence at the SDP decommissioning work areas to ensure compliance with approved methodologies and waste acceptance criteria. There will be some opportunity for agile working.

What will you be doing?

As the Radioactive Waste Engineer, you will undertake necessary activities to enable suitable characterisation and sentencing of radioactive waste; such as sampling and analysis campaigns, and interpretation of data. You will provide oversight, advice and technical support to operations to ensure that all waste management (including storage, processing, packaging, transport and treatment or disposal) is in line with regulatory and management system requirements.

You will liaise with operations, engineering, radiation protection and other relevant personnel to ensure radioactive waste management procedures and standards are upheld. You will produce and maintain BPM cases to support operations and the treatment/disposal of radioactive waste. In addition, support applications and variations to Environmental Permit(s) or other authorisations/obligations to enable operations and to ensure that they are complied with.

Lastly, you will contribute to the development and implementation of any relevant processes and procedures related to radioactive waste management as well as develop and maintain a good working knowledge of available radioactive waste treatment and disposal routes, and how to demonstrate that associated Waste Acceptance Criteria can be met.
