Specialist Operations Online (UCOL) is responsible for conducting undercover operations online in support of National Crime Agency (NCA) projects and investigations at both a national and international level.

This demanding role requires flexibility and resilience; under the confines of an authority you will be provided with unique opportunities to communicate and form relationships online with subjects engaged in criminality.

Job description

It is desirable for candidates to have a good understanding of all types of criminality online as well as relevant experience working as an undercover officer online. Good communication skills and an ability to operate covertly and credibly in cover to collect intelligence and evidence is essential.

This demanding role requires flexibility and resilience; the successful candidate will be working predominantly on operations, tackling high harm Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation (CSAE) offenders, cyber and financial criminals but may also be required to support other NCA priority operations such as firearms.

Successful candidates will be expected to work flexibly against operational requirements.

You may be expected to work directly or indirectly in tackling child sexual abuse and exploitation which will involve exposure to child sexual abuse material. You should carefully consider the nature of this work before deciding to apply.
Prior to taking up the role all officers working on or supporting this type of operational activity will undergo a psychological assessment and then at regular intervals once in post.

The post will be based in either London or Warrington only, however this post may also require travel and occasional working from alternative locations other than normal places of work.
 

Responsibilities

As a UCOL operative you will:

- Deploy against a broad spectrum of criminality with primary focus being against high harm offenders involved in online CSAE, Cyber or Financial crime activity.
- Play an integral role in the re-development of the NCA's undercover online capability with responsibility for capturing and recording evidence and intelligence accurately against tasked operational activity whilst also ensuring compliance with legislation and policy.
- Give evidence at court both in the UK and abroad in line with legislation and NCA policies.
- Understand and inform relevant risk assessments relating to tasked activity performed and report issues or identified risks in accordance with Agency Policy.
- Contribute to tactical plans under the direction and management of Cover Officers.
- Maintain an in-depth knowledge of relevant legislation appropriate to the role performed to ensure integrity of activity.
- Identify new and innovative approaches to tackle online crime threats in support of tasked operational activity requests; including, but not limited to child sexual abuse and exploitation.
- Work with partner agencies and stakeholders to identify tactics and techniques that develop the NCA’s covert investigations function.
- Maintain suitable knowledge and skills; keeping updated with online criminal trends to assist in building capability and capacity to infiltrate criminal activity being conducted through the Internet.
- Assist in raising awareness in the use of covert online tactics within the Agency and it’s key partners.

Qualifications

Candidates must have successfully achieved College of Policing undercover online accreditation (A5/A50) as a minimum.
