DevOps Software Engineer

This is a DevOps role that will involve managing a series of environments to ensure that they are operational and available to use. The environments are UNIX so this skill is essential.

Other skills of interest are:
- AWS Cloud Skills, some environments are run in the Cloud
- Manage the builds - Jenkins, Nexus and Maven
- Manage the deployments - Ansible scripts
- Unix: RedHat, Ubuntu, Solaris and most versions of Linux/Unix.
- Web Servers: Apache and Java App deployments/config; Jboss, Tomcat.
- Database: MySQL database admin, backup/restore. Oracle database admin.
- Scripting: Unix shell scripts BASH, Python/Chef, Ruby, RedHat kick-start. Windows power shell.
- Automation: Jenkins deployments for Git Hub/Stash and platform build using Amazon API. Crontab and stand alone scripts to Jenkins conversions.
- Ansible/Chef: Ruby/Python/Beto3/Packer and PowerShell playbooks/recipes for deploy-ment of applications and change management.
- Networking: Routers, switches and firewalls and networking

1. Managing releases to the client facing environments during an outage window
2. Ability to write deployment scripts in a number of langugages, mainly Ansible, PERL and BASH useful
3. Working with the other teams to ensure that environments are available for use, support and maintenance.
4. Out of Hours work is required but this can be offset
5. Process improvements, identify and impement changes in the process to reduce outage times.

This is a large programme that has been running for a number of years and has recently had a three year extension. The environment team are responsible for managing approx 20 environments on premise and in the cloud to ensure that they are availble for the clients. This is a demanding programme with tight deadlines, out of hours work and requires the team to multitask on a daily basis. This is a secure project and requires SC clearance as it is supporting critical national infrastructure. There will be more opportunities to work in AWS and build a proper DevOps team supporting multiple clients and applications going forward.
