Empowering projects in a complex world.

Are you ready to take up a vital role in shaping some of our exciting Portfolios, Programmes and Projects? How about joining our talented team, where everyone has a voice, and together we face our clients' problems head-on. It's a diverse and inclusive work environment where world-class talent knows no distinctions.

We know that different people have different priorities, which is why we're here to support you. Flexible and remote working is a central part of our culture. So, talk to us about what's ideal for you – from reduced weeks or compressed hours, to buying more leave over school holidays. And if you're returning from a career break, ask us how we can help you transition back into work with us.

As a Consultant Programme and Project Planner in 'Aerospace, Defence, Security and Technology' (ADS&T), you'll be part of our Portfolio, Programme and Project (P3M) Practice. In your role you will be working with our clients, suppliers and Atkins teams to enable and achieve maximum benefits from digital transformation and innovative operations.

You will provide consultancy advice on best practice, facilitate planning workshops as well as building, analysing and maintaining schedules on behalf of the schedule owner. At Programme level, the Planner will provide quality assurance across the delivery environment in line with the chosen methodology and against approved planning standards and policy. You will also provide training and coaching to the Project Management community where appropriate.

You'll feel a great sense of pride supporting some of our largest clients in the Defence sector across the MoD and its associated supply-chain.

Your purpose:

  • Advise and support clients and colleagues on planning best practice and delivery methodology within a Defence Engineering environment.
  • Create, review, maintain and administer Portfolio/ Programme/Project schedules.
  • Report on schedule status at multiple levels.
  • Identify and maintain dependencies across the delivery environment.
  • Input to and review of management products relevant to the schedules.
  • Support the schedule update process.
  • Carry out analysis and assurance activities, including critical path analysis and schedule risk analysis.
  • Lead/facilitate planning workshops and training sessions.
  • Proactively identify and progress opportunities to add value to strategic and tactical decision making.
  • Use an understanding of the aspects of both waterfall and agile projects to advise on the most appropriate planning practices.
  • Support resource utilisation and planning analysis where appropriate.

What you can bring:

  • Consulting experience within client environments, ideally within the Defence sector and potentially with knowledge of excellent practices from other sectors that can drive client business process improvement.
  • Experience and understanding of supporting multi-level integrated planning of complex engineering programmes and projects.
  • A solid understanding of one or more project and programme management methodologies.
  • Practical and formal experience of both waterfall and agile planning principles and methods.
  • Consultancy and communication skills to ensure clarity in all situations and to effectively influence and advise.
  • A current understanding and working knowledge of the latest trends in planning practices, including one or more Agile methodologies.
  • Primavera and / or Microsoft Project to an advanced level (formal and/or comparable experience).
  • An analytical thinker with creative and innovative problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to review supplier schedules and integrate with master schedule.
  • Ability to develop effective communication channels with key stakeholders.
  • Work as part of a team, sharing ideas and aiming for planning excellence.
  • Ability to deliver effective training and coaching sessions to aid adoption and maturity of planning practices.
