Job Description Summary In this role, the system safety engineer will partner with globally located cross-functional teams to evaluate the safety of wind turbines during development and throughout the product life cycle of all GE Onshore wind turbine models. The system safety engineer will be responsible for evaluating the hazards associated with GE Renewable Energy Onshore Wind Turbines and ensures all the turbine safety related risks are reduced to the lowest level possible. The system safety engineer will execute to the GE Renewable Energy Onshore Wind System Safety Program in accordance with IEC 62061 and other GE internal safety processes.

Job Description Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Lead quantitative modeling on complex systems to assess design safety risk.
  • Assist root cause analysis for safety related concerns by working with cross-functional teams representing Fleet Support Engineering, Design Engineering, Regional Fleet Reliability Operations, Environmental Health and Safety, Legal, Supplier Quality, Sourcing, and Chief Engineers Office.
  • Lead turbine functional safety analyses to identify safety requirements and flow down results to the development team for implementation.
  • Lead safety risk assessments for new and existing (installed base equipment) units to assess the risk and  identify mitigation measures.
  • Review and sign off on the test plans and test procedures to ensure the safety requirements are tested adequately.
  • Review the system, subsystem, component level requirements and test requirements against the safety requirements and verify the traceability of the product and test requirements to the safety requirements. 
  • Support the design and test teams with safety requirements interpretations to ensure timely implementation.
  • Participate in Configuration Change Boards (CCB) to ensure the product related changes have been assessed for safety and the updates are flowed back to the safety analyses.
  • Support design reviews and test reviews
  • Create safety documentation per the GE Renewables Onshore Wind System Safety Program / process and develop safety design practices
  • Provide safety engineering mentoring and training to engineers with less safety experience.
  • Review safety analysis performed by other safety engineers on the team
  • Manage and maintain the implementation of IEC 62061 "Safety of Machinery - Functional Safety of Safety-Related Electrical, Electronic and Programmable electronic control systems" or an equivalent standard for the development of onshore wind turbine designs.
  • Manage and maintain safety requirements and specifics related to hazard identification, risk analysis, failure rate target setting, identification of Safety-Related Control Functions, and setting of SIL levels
  • Assess the effects of functional safety requirements on turbine design load cases, turbine operability, turbine control hardware, and turbine control software and driving relevant changes into these areas
  • Flow down safety requirements and partner with Engineering teams to interpret the requirements to facilitate implementation into design.
  • Lead integration of overall safety system with Segment System Engineers to drive consistent safety concepts and uniform design across segment products

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in an engineering focused discipline (Software background preferred)
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in system safety and performing safety analyses

Desired Skills:
  • Software safety background in accordance with IEC 61508-3 or similar standards
  • Experience with safety critical systems and performing safety analyses
  • Experience performing safety analyses such as Preliminary Hazard Analysis, Functional Hazard Analysis, Quantitative Fault Tree Analysis, and Operation and Support Hazard Analysis (Haz OP Analysis) in accordance with MIL-STD-882 or IEC 62061
  • Experience with developing, interpreting, and flowing down safety requirements
  • Ability to work in cross-functional, multiple-culture environment with good teamwork spirit
  • High sense of responsibility with result oriented and proactive response attitude
