Here at Serco, we are looking for an experienced Tutor to join the Offender Learning & Skills team at HMP Kilmarnock. Reporting into the Assistant Director - Head of Enterprise Functions, you will be responsible for the delivery of Core Skills to prisoners across a range of abilities, including the use of IT as a medium for learning and development.

As our new Core Skills Tutor, you be responsible for aspects development and implementation of a specialised learning strategy for offenders with learning difficulties. You will also engage in teaching, assessment, quality assurance, delivery and review of course material on the Core Skills course, as well as participating in matters related to all programmes in the education department, as agreed with Assistant Director. Other key activities will include:

  • Administration and interpretation of the Skills Profiler Scotland learning assessment and providing a needs analysis from resulting data.
  • Providing of a range of Core Skills focussed courses and qualifications for offenders and working in partnership with Vocational Training staff to implement core skills into workshops.
  • Developing and implementing strategies for the assessment and support of offenders with a learning difficulty/disability and providing a structured learning plan for offenders with processes for monitoring. Ensure support and progression for offenders in line with the learning plan.
  • Providing training and support to prison staff to raise awareness of learning and in particular the needs of prisoners with learning difficulties.


What you will need to do the role:

First and foremost, you must have minimum Cert Ed or PGCE or TQFE and hold a Level 5 in Literacy and Numeracy. To be successful, you will have excellent written & verbal communication skills with the capacity to make reasonable decisions and lead by example. Due to the nature of the role, you must also have a proven track record of the ability to assess, develop and progress learners towards recognised qualifications, with experience of developing and the implementing of learning strategies and/or recognised qualification in staff training.

The successful candidate will have the ability to develop a range of learning tools, for difficult to engage groups, and ideally experience of working with offenders or vulnerable groups. You will have proven experience of working with people with one or more support needs in the area of SpLD, and hold, or be working towards a recognised qualification, although this is not essential. We would also be interested in experience of course accreditation procedures with SQA.
