Secure Communications is a business stream within Defence Systems Technology (DST) Mission Systems, which provides support to the MoD for key communications and training systems. This position is within the engineering team based in Devonport.

An opportunity has arisen for the right candidate to join a dynamic team that provides system commissioning and in-service support for external communications systems on board UK Submarines. We are looking for someone that will make a positive impact on the business by being able to diagnose and solve problems that could prevent a platform from communicating with shore authorities or other units.

The difference the Communications Engineer will make
You will provide support to the current engineering team in carrying out defect investigation, maintenance and installation / commissioning of submarine external communications equipment.

There will also be the opportunity to assist on other projects within the Secure Communications scope of work.
The job will also require you to adapt and respond to Operational Defects (OPDEFs) from platforms, which may require short notice deployment to other areas of the UK and beyond.

Who we're looking for
You will be working in a small but highly effective team where the highest of standards will be expected from both a technical and behavioural perspective. You will need to collaborate with Royal Navy and MoD staff as well as internal Babcock employees.

Experience and knowledge
You will require significant experience in commissioning / maintaining / operating External Communications systems is preferred and experience in basic fault finding including use of test equipment to diagnose cabling faults.

You'll have an understanding of Radio Frequency distribution, across the spectrum used in submarine communications, relevant knowledge of both IP based and serial networks and knowledge of MoD and Royal Navy working practices, including formal trial processes

Skills and attributes
• Proficiency in MS Office applications
• Ability to work as part of a team and individually when required.
• Ability to interpret information correctly from equipment documentation
• Knowledge of computer operating systems
• You'll be someone for whom collaboration and working in partnership comes naturally
• Adaptable and able to navigate change easily

Qualifications
You should be technically qualified to at least HNC or FD level in Electrical / Electronic engineering and / or experience as a Communications / Weapons system engineer. A current UK driving license is essential as travel to other sites will be expected.
