PCSO (Police Community Support Officer) - Newport, Carmarthen and Machynlleth

The railways lie at the heart of Britain's community, commerce and industry. With over 6 million passenger journeys and 400k tonnes of freight being moved from depots to docks every day on Britain's railways we have the unique task of ensuring that all this takes place within a safe and secure environment.

Our mission is to protect and serve the railway environment and its community, keeping levels of disruption, crime and the fear of crime as low as possible and our police community support officers (PCSO's) are vital to achieving this.

You'll have all the normal responsibilities that a Home Office PCSO will have, but focused within a railway environment which will also allow you to enforce BTP Byelaws.

Neighbourhood policing is as important to BTP as it is to other forces; it's simply that our neighbourhood looks different to your local town. It is more transient and will pose just as many challenges.

No two days will be the same as you help protect and reassure the passengers, railway staff and retailers within the BTP Community. As well as conducting visible patrols at stations, you'll confidently deal with a number of tasks, including crowd control; dealing with security threats; undertaking minor crime investigation; working with your community to build and maintain relationships and partnerships, and providing support and assistance to Police Officers.

To rise to all of these challenges takes a special kind of person. You'll need to be resilient with a real flair for customer service. You'll have the ability to engage with the community and forge strong links with our partner organisations.

Articulate, adaptable, and able to think on your feet, you'll be known for your ability to resolve a diverse range of scenarios. Above all, you won't see this as a job, but as a vocation - and you'll be passionate about having the chance to make a difference.

PCSOs need to be prepared to work shifts, including weekends and bank holidays.

Previous experience is preferred but not essential.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable but not an essential skill in the selection process. Successful applicants must be prepared to undertake Welsh language learning up to Level 1 standard, which is the ability to converse and understand basic Welsh greetings.

What's in it for you?

Being a PCSO is not an easy role and you may be thinking 'Is it worth it? What will I get out of this?'

The answer is: A lot. There's so much to gain from becoming a PCSO.

In return for your hard work you will:

  • have a rewarding job where no two days are ever the same
  • be constantly challenged and always learning
  • be valued for your contribution to your community
  • have excellent pay progression, pension scheme and benefits package
  • have the opportunity of internal progression to become a Police Officer (fast track scheme)
Sound interesting? Join us on the journey and bring your creativity and commitment on board and help us make a difference.

*Please note this is a talent pool for future intakes throughout 2022.

Internal PCSO's are not eligible to apply.

We want our organisation to be as diverse as the community it serves and welcome applications from everyone. Language skills can be especially valuable to community engagement and candidates who can speak additional languages such as Welsh, Hindi, Arabic, Farsi, Bengali, Urdu, Amharic, Pushtu, Punjabi, Tamil and Somali are encouraged to apply. All applications will be judged on their individual merit.

Any cautions or convictions including those deemed 'spent' must be declared at the point of application but will not necessarily exclude you from employment.

BTP has undertaken a review of Police Staff pensions and as a result of this the Police Staff pension will be changing. The current police staff pension is a Defined Benefit scheme which is administered by the Railways Pension scheme. The new pension scheme which is launching is a Defined Contribution scheme which is administered by Royal London. The new pension scheme is awaiting formal approval and an introductory date is not finalised. The earliest this will be is August 2021. If you have an queries, please contact the recruitmentteam@btp.police.uk.
