We are recruiting for the Head of Cyber Threat Operations


A primarily technical and delivery focused role providing expert advice on cyber threats and responses. You mentor other cyber staff and communicate concepts to senior managers in non-technical language.

Location - Reading area

Key Responsibilities


Devise and lead delivery of the of the technical strategy for prevention, detection and response across AWE's systems, identifying and driving security improvements across AWE systems, with a particular focus on increasing use of cloud and zero trust

  • Ownership of threat intelligence function which covers:
    • Develop and maintain AWE's understanding of the technical threat from hostile actors
    • Tracking of emerging vulnerabilities and attack techniques, assessing for potential impact.
    • Tracking / developing understanding of malware and exploits most significant to AWE.
  • Manage cyber incidents
  • Subject matter expert advisor to C-Level staff on technical threat and risk
  • Be able to act as subject matter expert / expert practitioner in one or more areas from threat hunting, security assurance, incident response
  • Own the threat modelling methodology and process for higher sensitivity systems.
  • Technical mentoring of analysts and security architects to support their own development.
  • Track, analyse and report on emerging trends in cyber security.
  • Represent AWE at technical cyber events and forums. Grow AWE's reputation in the cyber community and within government.

Key Skills:

  • Intricate understanding of cyber security, underpinned by technical security experience. Ability to balance business need and risk by understanding the details
  • Robust understanding of attack methodologies, threat actors
  • Leadership of technical responses to cyber incidents in a live operational environment.
  • Experience effecting change in a large organisation
  • Ability to analyse technical data and reports extracting actionable knowledge
  • Leadership of people and ability to motivate, enthuse and mentor other technical cyber staff.
  • Ability to communicate technical content to a wide range of audiences both inside and outside the business.
