British Transport Police (BTP) are looking to recruit a People Advisor on a Permanent Contract paying from £34,274.06 up to £36,461.77 plus £2,700.10 London Allowance per annum based at Force Headquarters, Camden, London.

This role requires the People Advisor to work a blended approach of agile and office based working. It is likely that the post holder will be required to work from FHQ a couple of times a week and/or other BTP Offices, but this will vary dependent on business need.

BTP is the national police Force for the rail network throughout Great Britain, including London Underground, across which we ensure the safety and security of nearly 3 billion passenger journeys and over 100 million tons of freight every year. The world in which we work is fast-paced, operationally and commercially demanding, and constantly changing.

As People Advisor you will be responsible for providing, under a Business Partnering model, SME advice and support to managers and staff on people matters.


To empower managers to lead on people matters with expert support and guidance where required Provision of specialist people advice and support to the organisation, supporting non-routine cases and advising on strategy, workforce planning, organisational design, talent management & performance management within BTP P&D guidelines/policies/procedures and relevant legislative requirements.

As People Advisor you will be required to:

  • Stakeholder relationship -To work with and develop an understanding of the department/division to provide clear professional advice across the full range of generalist complex people matters (such as grievances; organisational and career development including talent management; long term sickness absence; workforce planning and change management) to enable the department/division to achieve its goals
  • People Planning and Change - Under the guidance and direction of the Senior People Advisor work with management as a change professional to contribute towards the efficient delivery and evaluation of change programmes, especially where related to people activities. Ensure effective and timely implementation of P&D initiatives in line with division priorities
  • Talent Management/Workforce Planning -To work collaboratively with SMT's and contribute towards the collation of data for analysis pertaining to undertake an analysis around retention & attrition which will assist in succession and workforce planning. Also, to guide and advise on different talent management initiatives to enable successful career development of their workforce using various talent management tools
  • Professional Development - to actively maintain and develop knowledge of employment case law as well as BTP policies and procedures to understand the Force's strategy and vision. To actively seek to maintain and develop skills to facilitate, HR practices and developments and own personal skills within the framework of guidance and support provided by BTP

The successful candidate will be required to evidence the following skills:

  • CIPD qualified and working towards MCIPD status or equivalent experience
  • Coaching and mentoring Level 5 CMI or equivalent experience
  • A successful track record in providing HR generalist work in a large, multi disciplined operational organisation
  • Broad experience of providing clear, balanced advice and guidance on a wide range of generalist HR issues to management teams
  • Experience in developing good working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, both internally and externally
  • Professional, persuasive and influential
  • Able to command the confidence of senior operational managers, employees, trade unions, external partners and other stakeholders
  • Strong negotiating, influencing and interpersonal communication skills

BTP has undertaken a review of Police Staff pensions and as a result of this the Police Staff pension will be changing. The current police staff pension is a Defined Benefit scheme which is administered by the Railways Pension scheme. The new pension scheme which is launching is a Defined Contribution scheme which is administered by Royal London. The new pension scheme is awaiting formal approval and an introductory date is not finalised. The earliest this will be is August 2021.
