The role is working in the Defence space as part of a small, multi-skilled System Admin team providing 2nd Line technical support to DFTS Data Services. Security forms a major part of what we do in the Defence space, as such it will be expected you work with BT Security to ensure that the security and integrity of the DFTS Data Services are maintained in line with the relevant DFTS SyI’s.

The successful candidate will ideally hold SC clearance and must be willing to gain DV clearance.

You'll have the following responsibilities

• Maintain the NMS Systems for the DFTS data platforms so that they remain serviceable and secure for the NMS user.

• Responsibility for the day to day secure configuration of Solaris and Windows Operating Systems across multiple Network Management platforms.

• Upkeep and maintain a list of all hardware items utilised on the services within your area of responsibility. This is to include but not limited to LAN Switches, Servers and Workstations.

• Responsibility for ensuring all hardware, Operating Systems and application software configurations are maintained in accordance with the technical design for the service and the manufacturer’s instructions so as to minimise potential vulnerabilities.

• Application of all associated patches in line with the timescales agreed with the customer authority.

• Regularly reporting to the Defence Manager on the status of the Network Management environments and any issues being faced.

• Work with BT security to ensure that the Network Management Systems continue to comply with the specific contract requirements both physical and logical.

• Generate and maintain a routine schedule to ensure the peak performance of the Network Management Systems under your control.

• Continuous Improvement is a must, as a team we are always looking for better ways of working.

• Coaching, mentoring and supporting other team members, providing feedback where appropriate within the team to ensure that everyone is included within the team and that there is a 'one team approach'.

You'll have the following skills & experience

• Security Clearance: You MUST be able to hold and maintain the highest personal security credentials, technology accreditations as appropriate/required to carry out your role as authorised and required and as defined in the Security Aspects Letter (SAL) and the contracts that you are working on.

• A good knowledge of Windows, Solaris and Red Hat Linux skills 

• Technical Ability: Working across systems running multiple Operating Systems a good knowledge of Windows, Solaris and Red Hat Linux at administrator level will enable you to support and fault find across the platforms.

• Collaborative Working: The ability to work collaboratively with numerous key stake holders will ensure timely delivery and rectification of faults.

• Communicating and Engagement: Communicate effectively by delivering and contextualising key messages (good news/bad news/change communications) in a way which can be understood by the end users and Defence Managers in the live environment.

• Continuous Improvement: The use of ITIL tools and techniques to drive improvement activities, is commercially aware and understands business rationale for such improvement activities.

• Pride: Accountable for the physical state of the operational equipment on the supported NMS – making sure issues are escalated to the Defence Manager.

• Experience in Windows Administration 

• Experience in Red Hat Linux 

• You make critical and urgent decisions, considering the risk and impact despite uncertainty or limited information

• You prioritise the delivery of a brilliant customer experience, promoting a ‘customer-centric’ environment within your team.

• You build open and trusting relationships with colleagues across departments, prompting long-term partnerships.
