Job Description Summary As a Medical Physicist, you will manage the technology input for the development of new imaging contrast agents (MRI) throughout the preclinical, clinical and post-marketing phases. You will work closely with the global Imaging Technology Group within R&D reporting to the Head of Imaging Technology. Key areas of expertise are in MR sequence manipulation in regards of optimizing enhancement by contrast media and understanding of how contrast techniques are used clinically. The role is based in the GE Healthcare office in Amersham, United Kingdom.

Job Description Responsibilities
  • Strong background in MR physics and expertise in using MR imaging techniques in a clinical environment.
  • Ability to develop imaging manuals, training materials and quality manuals for clinical research studies across different MRI scanner vendors.
  • In-depth expertise and hands on experience in scanner qualification (phantom imaging and analysis) and image Quality Control.
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with the respective staff participating in this development including the Imaging Technology Leaders, Project Stream Leaders, the Project Director, Clinical Study Team Leader, Clinical Research Associates, relevant staff at participating clinical study centers in order to fulfill the needs of the clinical study.
  • Self-motivated, willingness to take the initiative to identify opportunities for improvement and take actions to improve.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including, team working skills and good communication skills.
  • Set the requirements for the execution of imaging at clinical sites, including providing 'hands-on' technical support to sites.
  • Travel regularly to international and domestic clinical study sites to assist with or perform their initiation and training. In certain cases, the site training may need to be performed remotely (i.e. via telephone, web conference, telepresence or similar). 
  • Image data management in support of clinical studies for internal and external customers according to Good Clinical Practice and company procedures and guidelines.
  • Maintain competence in the modality associated with the position (e.g., through a Continuous Professional Development program).
Qualifications and experience
  • MSc or PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant science discipline such as Medical Physics, Physics, Biomedical Engineering, biophysics or a related discipline.
  • Proven experience in analyzing medical images, and familiarity with clinical MRI practice.
  • Understanding of MR tissue contrast mechanisms and efficacy of novel paramagnetic contrast agents using experimental and simulation approaches.
  • Knowledge in the scientific and clinical research of diagnostic imaging agents.
  • Competency in using medical imaging workstations. Experience teaching MRI to Radiographers/Radiologists or other hospital staff.
  • A high degree of initiative and the ability to work systematically and independently is expected.
  • Experience identifying, troubleshooting, documenting and following technical problems through to completion.
  • Experience with Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM).

Desirable skills
  • Relevant professional qualifications and certifications (e.g., State Registration as a Clinical Scientist or Board Certification, Member or Fellow in an appropriate professional body, licensed technologist or radiographer).
  • Experience in MR pulse sequence programming and protocol adaption on clinical MR scanners, as well as paramagnetic MR contrast media development.
  • Software experience with programming languages (MatLab, Freesurfer, C++, Python, IDL etc.).
  • Familiarity with commercializing scientific ideas and/or previous industrial experience and communication with clinical/ healthcare experts.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative, matrixed, and customer focused environment; and experience with cross-site research collaborations.
  • Prior experience working at an imaging core lab or similar environment.
  • Experience working in one other modality such as CT or Xray or Ultrasound.
  • Experience with writing clinical study manuals (e.g. imaging manual or image acquisition protocol).
  • Experience creating and editing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Ability to multitask and the ability to persevere and work effectively during high-pressure situations.
