BANK OF ENGLAND ??? TECHNOLOGY DIVISION

The Technology division manages and supports all aspect of technology delivery across the Bank, from maintaining critical systems which underpin the UK economy, to providing big data analytics, implementing comprehensive cyber security programmes and introducing innovative solutions in support of a digital workplace.


Technology???s key objective is to support all other areas of the Bank in achieving our collective mission to promote the good of the people of the UK by maintaining monetary and financial stability. This is achieved through the delivery of appropriate, high performing, resilient solutions and information services across the organisation and externally.


Technology is structured around a simple operating model: Analyse-Deliver-Service-Secure. This model ensures transparency and effectiveness in our delivery, prioritisation and cost base for IT services and promotes close working relationships with colleagues across the Bank so that we can all deliver with pace and agility.

 

The Linux Engineer role sits within the Infrastructure Domain of the Delivery Division in Technology and is responsible for all aspects of the technical delivery of projects requiring Red Hat Linux as well as providing expertise into the future direction of the platform. Whilst primarily a project-based role, a small element of BAU support may be required.

 

                

THE ROLE OF A LINUX TECHNICIAN

    The Linux Technician will be a member of the Infrastructure Delivery Team which is accountable for the engineering and delivery of the Bank???s varied server infrastructure.Leadership, Teamwork & Communication ??? Ensures effective relationships are sustained across the wider Technology team, internal and external stakeholders, and any domain partners/suppliers.Strategic Partner Management ??? Contributes to the relationships with the Bank???s strategic partners/suppliers in support of the wider Technology community.Contracts & Commercial Capability ??? Strives to deliver the best value for money by continually looking for improvements/efficiencies across both server delivery and capital expenditure.  Technology Strategy ??? Work closely with Architecture to lead the development and implementation and of the Linux server estate within the Bank and, more specifically, to produce and articulately communicate a clear view of the domain???s future strategy in Linux server delivery.Delivery ??? Support both the Delivery team leader and Infrastructure Engineering Manager to ensure that all change, whether programmes and projects, or smaller scale releases, is delivered in a timely and cost-efficient way, whilst ensuring that they align to both operations and the future domain strategy.Domain Enablement ??? Ensure compliance with key audit, risk, and security policies and procedures applicable to the Linux server estate.               Provisioning of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL 6 and 7) systems in both physical and virtual environmentsDevelopment of scripts for automated configuration management, monitoring, batch and deploymentProvide recommendations for improvements to current delivery and operational processes and proceduresMentoring and guidance for other Linux engineersAdvise project managers on Linux-related technical and delivery matters




ESSENTIAL TECHNICAL SKILLS & REQUIREMENTS:

    Managing Red Hat Enterprise Linux production systems (RHEL 5, 6 and 7)Using scripting to automate tasksPlanning and prioritising of project delivery activitiesGood interpersonal and communication skillsStrong analytical and troubleshooting skillsExperience with virtualisation technologies (Linux under VMWare)ITIL framework experienceExperience of managing systems with RHN satellite


DESIRABLE TECHNICAL SKILLS & REQUIREMENTS:

    Recent experience with JBossLinux performance tuning skillsExperience with Linux failover clusteringExperience of Kerberos in regard to securing Linux applications and AD integration.Experience of Cisco UCS hardware.Experience in managing third party engineersExperience in resource and workload managementService-orientated customer facing skillsDisaster Recovery and Business Continuity planning and executionProven skills in aligning IT with organisational driversIndustry awareness to identify improvement opportunities and implement them across the services and processes incorporated within the domainGeneral knowledge of all areas of IT application and infrastructureDetailed understanding of processes and systems within the domain of expertiseKnowledge of Puppet or similar configuration management toolsGood working knowledge of the mission of the Bank of England and the part Technology playsKnowledge of ???big data??? platforms, e.g. Horton Works, Hadoop etc.
