Job Details

Greater Manchester Police is one of the largest police forces in the UK and is responsible for keeping its diverse population of almost 3 million safe, spread over more than 1,200 sq. km. Manchester in particular has been billed as the most diverse city in Europe with its population speaking at least 200 different languages, leading to the city being named as Britain's "City of languages".

GMP are committed to ensure that the make-up of our workforce is reflective of the communities we serve and we recognise that having a diverse workforce makes us more approachable and relevant to the public.

The Force's Corporate Communications Branch is responsible for ensuring the right information gets to the right communities. As part of this, the branch ensures the media are aware of policing operations, news and appeals on crime. It also develops campaigns to promote community safety and support local initiatives. GMP recognises the key role the media play in engaging with communities and has an open approach to dealing with the media.

The branch has an enviable track record and has won numerous awards for crisis communication, digital developments, social media initiatives, campaigns and partnership working. Following a review the team has a revitalised vision and needs the key individuals to help take communication activity to the next level.

The Media Office is looking for someone who will deliver a proactive, quality news information service on behalf of GMP, including gathering and disseminating information to media, social media and the wider public, monitoring and evaluation of media coverage and providing backup services as required, including inputs into training activities and advice on media matters to senior officers.

The ideal candidate would be expected to demonstrate extensive experience of media handling, a willingness to provide strong leadership and to help in the day-to-day running of the GMP Media Office.

Successful candidates will be expected to work as part of a nine week rota, on 6.30-2.30pm, 8-4pm, 10-6pm and 11-7pm. You will be on-call to the force 24/7 for one week in nine, again on a rota basis.

The health, safety and wellbeing of our people in GMP is our top priority, across the force we intend to provide the safest possible work environment and reduce the risk of potential transmissions. We continue to risk assess and review our safety measures in line with government guidance and have put in place measures to ensure that all our buildings are COVID-19 secure.
