Job Description Summary The Mechanical Design Engineering Leader demonstrates accountability for functional, business, and broad company objectives. You will integrate and develop engineering practices that meet business needs across the organisation, manage complex issues within functional areas of expertise, manage and develop teams, be involved in long-term planning, and contribute to overall business strategy.

Job Description Essential Responsibilities

The Mechanical Design Engineering Leader is the functional manager to the mechanical design teams engaged in the design, development, test and qualification of mechanical solutions within Power Distribution and Controls products. Your team will work on large electrical power cabinets and the packaging of electronic modules. 
You will:

  • Provide functional leadership and technical direction to your team - ensure adherence to prescribed company and functional processes and procedures
  • Establish priorities for staff in your team that align with company and divisional objectives
  • Coordinate efforts within your team to assure technical quality excellence, timely and on-budget completion of work, effective use of resources and responsiveness to customer / program needs
  • Manage resource supply and demand for your team, including recruitment of permanent staff, placement of work at GE global sites and outsource of work packages to suppliers
  • Facilitate communication of technical and business information between organisations and within your team
  • Communicate with, and provide support to senior leaders on technical, organizational, resource and staff issues
  • Define roles and responsibilities for your team, and other assigned personnel
  • Conduct appraisals, performance management, and participate in salary planning
  • Promote professional growth through timely performance feedback and ongoing coaching
  • Ensure company compliance training requirements are implemented within your team


Qualifications / Requirements

  • Relevant degree or similar qualification
  • Extensive experience of mechanical or electro-mechanical design in a new product introduction environment within a regulated industry
  • Demonstrated line management experience
  • Ability to work with suppliers and supply chain to align designs choices with capabilities
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership and team-building skills


Desired Characteristics

  • Understanding of regulatory requirements for mechanical design and qualification of aerospace products
  • Experience of working with mechanical design and CAD tools
  • Working knowledge of APQP/AS9145 or similar quality improvement system
