The Role of a Planner

As a Planner/Scheduler on the Project, you will be responsible for the delivery of plans/schedules to one or more areas of this high-profile programme. You will develop accurate and timely schedules in line with PMO controls and standards, managing, reporting and escalating non-conformance of Programme delivery area.

You have responsibility for reviewing programme information, raising appropriate challenge and identification of trends that may impact the programme meeting its objectives. You will provide support, mentoring and technical insight to other Planners within the team. You will build trusted relationships with the programme delivery areas to which you are assigned.

The Project Complexity level is ???High??? which is generally characterised as having a high degree of uncertainty, large size, political sensitivity, technical complexity, large and complex set of stakeholders, and often need procedures and methodologies to be adapted to suit unique situations.

  • Stakeholder management
  • Can take initiative and exercises judgement, drawing on previous experience
  • Work ethic and pro-activeness are key
  • ???Self-starter??? who can manage own workload and priorities
  • Strong project planner with experience of working with or within a Project Management, Programme or Portfolio Office
  • Highly organised/ time management
  • Experience in putting together dependencies (dependency mapping)
  • A transparent and collaborative approach to decision making
  • Initiative and organisation skills
  • Excellent communications skills, both verbal and written
  • Reporting & Analysis (MS Project Online)
  • Risk & Issue Management
  • Maintain effective performance in a difficult and challenging circumstance

Typical role and responsibilities


  • Identifying and coordinating plan changes and obtaining approval via governance
  •  Supporting and managing PMs with identification and tracking of dependencies, Authority Responsibilities and assumptions
  • Providing proactive feedback and insight to the Programme Lead Planner and PMs, and support with identification and management of planning related risks and issues
  • Analysing project plans to identify the critical path and drive insights into delivery performance or planning improvements
  • Provide feedback to enhance programme planning standards and related ways of working across the programme (e.g. assumptions and dependency management)
