Job Details
The Defence Science and Technology Laboratory are seeking a Software Engineer to join their team in Porton Down.
Team: Ministry of Defence|Defence Science and Technology Laboratory|Cyber and Information Systems
Initial contracts will run for 360 days and offer a rate up to £430/day.
IR35 STATUS: Inside IR35. This engagement has been assessed by the public body as Inside IR35 legislation. Candidates would be required to operate through an umbrella company on this engagement.

This role requires Active DV (Developed Vetting) clearance. Applicants require active DV clearance or the willingness to go through clearance before starting on site. Candidates with current clearance will be preferred.
The Role
This Software Engineering role will support as part of a team, delivering software applications, for integration into hardware that will be installed on a variety of military platforms.
Main Responsibilities
- Assist with the design of software defined radio (SDR) elements of the software.
- Peer-review SDR software design and code.
- Contribute to the project Developers Guide.
- Design and implement code for the SDR components of the software.
- Document the traceability of the software from requirements through design and code to tests using reStructuredText.
- Develop and run unit and integration tests of developed software.
- Assist the development lead in estimating the effort required to complete tasks.
- Capture progress in GitLab Issues.
- Capture risks and issues that affect release scope, schedule and quality.
- Contribute to the development of the application User Guide.
Essential Skills and Experience
- C++, VHDL and Python development.
- Development of demodulation / decoding components in a software defined radio environment.
- Knowledge of video decoding techniques.
- Static analysis of C++ / VHDL / Python code.
- Experience writing automated software tests.
- Experience writing automated software tests.
- DV essential.
Desirable Skills and Experience
- Design using Sparx Enterprise Architect (or similar UML design tool).
- Developing documentation using reStructuredText or similar markup language.
- Experience using GitLab Issues / Board (for task management) and GitLab CI (for automation).
- Experience of agile software development (e.g. Kanban).
- Experience programming in Rust or similar modern memory-safe / concurrency-safe language.
Candidate Eligibility
Candidates must be eligible to work in the UK, this role will not offer Visa sponsorship. Tier 2 – General visas are cannot be accepted. This role requires that candidates be willing to undergo BPSS (DS) Baseline Personnel Security Standard (with a Disclosure Scotland).
