Role Summary

As Head of Projects, Engineering this role is responsible for ensuring the business has the right mix of people, processes and tools to effectively and efficiently deliver complex avionics product development projects within the agreed cost, schedule, quality and scope constraints. The ideal candidate will have a depth of experience of managing projects in a safety-critical product development environment. #LI-SJ1

Core Responsibilities

Product development:
Own the project lifecycle, driving stakeholders across the wider business to ensure projects deliver to agreed cost, schedule,quality and scope constraints
Represent engineering in the bids and proposals process, approving project management plans and presenting projects for approval at Gate 1B of the Programme Lifecycle
Chair fortnightly resource reviews, ensuring current and prospective projects are sufficiently resourced on both short-term and long-term planning horizons, in collaboration with the leaders of each engineering discipline
Operational excellence:
Manage the portfolio of projects; chairing monthly project reviews and taking corrective and preventive action as required to protect the customer, the business and the shareholder
Develop and improve methods for tracking project progress, including the deployment of earned value management
Own the risk management process
Own the estimation process, working with the leaders of each engineering function to develop standard estimates, standard costs and standard measures for tracking progress
Produce quarterly budget forecasts for expensed, capitalised and funded work
Produce monthly reports of project performance
Functional leadership:
Own and continually improve project management processes, standard work and tools, including the introducing of agile practices such as SCRUM
Ensure the projects team is sufficiently resourced to meet current and future business needs
Define goals and objectives for the projects team; hold monthly one-to-ones and performance appraisals and develop project management talent

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Ability to break a problem down into its constituent parts, identify root cause and implement corrective and preventive actions
Knowledge of different estimating techniques (including by analogy; parametric and bottom-up) and when these are best applied
Ability to lead and motivate small to medium-sized project teams (up to 25 people)
Knowledge of agile project management practices, such as Scrum and ideally how these are best implemented in a safety-critical product development environment
Financial planning and analysis skills
Excellent written communication, verbal communication and interpersonal skills
Strong prioritization, conflict management and decision making skills
Skill in supervising to include delegating responsibility, training and evaluating performance
Ability to work independently and prioritize duties with minimal supervision, in order to meet deadlines
Strong computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Project, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
Well-organized, detail-oriented, and ability to multi-task
Ability to gather data, to compile information and prepare reports
Ability to ensure a high level of service and quality is maintained
Ability to visualize and plan objectives and goals strategically
Ability to research and analyze data effectively
Demonstrated ability to provide cross-functional leadership
Ability to develop strategic plans to grow the business
