Job Description Summary The Power Conversion, Rotating Machines Business is responsible for the design and integration of world class multi-megawatt rotating electrical machinery and delivering optimised solutions in line with customer, contract and business requirements within a variety of applications including Marine & Naval Propulsion, Oil & Gas, Renewables, Test Bench Systems, Industrial Plant, etc.
Electrical Machine Advanced Mechanical Dynamics Engineer shall work as part of cross-functional teams to develop and deliver product designs and solutions that meet customer and project requirements. He shall work in conjunction with Electrical and CAD Engineering and shall collaborate with Project Management, Sourcing, Manufacturing, Quality teams and external technology partners on all activities required for the role. He should be able (a) to identify and provide reliable solutions for technical challenges ensuring customer satisfaction and (b) establish and maintain strong relationship with both internal and external customers.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and design of advanced mechanical solutions that meet the needs of customer/contract requirements and new product/solution developments, working in harmony with the Project technical lead, Project manager and other Engineering disciplines.
  • Conduct advanced mechanical dynamics analyses, including complex structural vibration and rotor dynamics, to validate solutions following GE's Design Best Practices including:
    • FEA Component and System Static and Dynamic Stress analysis
    • Modal analysis
    • Fatigue analysis
    • Noise and Structural Vibration Analysis
    • Component Wear
    • FMEA evaluation
  •  Derive specifications driven by customer/contract requirements and system solution for sub-system components including:
    • Forged shaft components
    • Fabricated frames and base plates
    • Cooling systems
    • Mounting systems including anti-shock and anti-vibration
    • Sole plate and foundations
    • Weld specifications
    • Couplings
    • Fastener systems
    • Support structures
    • Gear box housings
    • Bearing housings
    • Mechanical aspects of Sensors and Monitoring systems
    • Seals and Gaskets
  •  Develop robust designs and supporting documentation by following the business quality engineering processes including:
    • Product Safety
    • DFMEA
    • Critical To Quality
    • Design for Reliability
    • Design for manufacture
  • Contribute to system installation, commissioning, operating and maintenance manuals
  • Review and validation of sub-system and component-level mechanical analyses
  • Provide leadership in advancing the competitive position of GE's rotating machine solutions by identifying and implementing risk reduction strategies, cost saving opportunities and process improvements.
  • Mentor junior engineers and support the Team Leaders with training
  • Plan, coordinate, and provide technical and project guidance to wider engineering teams.
  • Provide technical support to CAD design, manufacturing, commissioning, service and test personnel.
  • Ensure product and component designs from the design teams meet the specifications.
  • Participate and contribute towards design practice work, share knowledge & assist in aligning the local team's competency with that of the global teams.
  • Understand the Global Technology & Engineering goals and objectives and advocate local adoption.
  • Participate in new software and new supplier qualification.
  • Carry out measurement plan/campaign (without limitation of skills) in order to get feedback from the test bench/field and work in closed loop with theory & software.
  • Give inputs/specifications to the ITO Risk Assessment process when requested, driving subsequent mitigation plan if required.
  • Read technical specifications and provide technical comment and clarification.
  • Participate in writing Engineering Design Standards & Guidance.
  • Support Commercial Operation and Mechanical Engineers at both ITO and OTR phase.
  • Support Project & fulfilment managers at OTR phase.
  • Attend factory tests for key sub-systems and components, validate the tests against the article requirements.
  • Support Service Team at commissioning and after and provide inputs in case of issue.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Mechanical Engineering Master degree (or equivalent knowledge and experience) or higher.
  • Proven experience - 5 years or more - in the field of structural FEA
  • Proven experience - 10 years or more - in the field of rotating machines
  • In depth knowledge of rotating systems and their associated design and implementation challenges
  • Demonstrated experience performing engineering calculations and design reviews.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex customer's specifications, engineering drawings and documentation
  • Experience with mechanical design tools such as Creo, TeamCenter, ANSYS, nCode , MathCAD, Simulink, etc,
  • Experience on flow and thermal analysis - both analytical and FE tool based. Thermal network creation for specific geometries used on rotating machines.
  • Manufacturing experience on rotating machines; test evaluations on vibration, noise, temperatures, debugging factory test issues, providing and following dispositions.
  • Familiarity with the application of various industry standards such as: NEMA, IEC, and API
  • Ability to communicate effectively across the business/customers in English
