Here at Serco, we are looking for a Custodial Operations Manager (COM) to join our Justice & Immigration team at HMP Kilmarnock, situated approximately three miles south-east of Hurlford in East Ayrshire and housing a range of male prisoner types.

Due to the nature of this operational role, you must have experience working in a Custodial environment. You will be a natural leader, with passion for supporting your team achieve the highest operational and ethical standards, and in accordance with our policies, processes and procedures.

As a designated COM you can be assigned to any role within the prison - what will never change is your commitment, enthusiasm and support of our prisoners through positivity and engagement.

You will line manage your team with a collaborative approach and promote Serco and the Scottish Prison Service (SPS) policy in all activities and behaviours by promoting diversity, decency, safety and reducing re-offending agendas.

A challenging, demanding varied role reporting into the Assistant Director and some of your duties will include:

  • Contributing to prisoner reports including sentence planning and parole reports when required.
  • Ensure that all staff supervise, manage and control prisoners decently, lawfully, safely and securely when carrying out activities.
  • Be responsible for incident management documentation and logging onto the Incident Monitoring & Performance System. (IPMS)
  • Ensure actions arising from audits, Her Majesty Inspectorate of Prisons for Scotland (HMIPS) inspections, local self-audits, etc. are delivered.
  • Plan staff rotas/self-rostering and work actively to plan and manage delivery of the regime.
  • Ensure all SPS standards and Service Delivery Indicators (SDIs) are implemented and managed within the relevant work area.


What you'll need to do the role

First and foremost, you will need to be qualified as a trained Prison Custody Officer and you will have attended an Assessment Centre.

In addition, you must be able to clearly demonstrate evidence of a commitment to learning, whether on the job (i.e. projects, secondments, volunteering to lead work outside your role) and/or formal learning.

A critical accountability in this role is the line management of people to ensure they have the knowledge, skills and confidence to carry out their roles. You will embody the principles of dignity, decency and security, demonstrating these actively to colleagues, prisoners and all of our stakeholders.
