About the role
We're looking for an Employee Engagement Manager to join us at HMNB Devonport, one of the largest naval bases in Western Europe. We're a key strategic partner to our customers; the MOD and the Royal Navy. We ensure that the UK Royal Navy goes to sea safely by supporting them in Devonport and around the world, delivering complex ship and submarine sustainment programmes and applying our core strengths of technology and expertise to sustain critical and complex assets to help maintain national security.

As the Employee Engagement Manager you will deliver internal communications for Submarines South, with emphasis on genuine workforce engagement and providing counsel and support to facilitate leadership engagement.
You will have direct responsibility for comms, engagement channel management, publications and delivery of employee facing campaigns. Reporting to the Programme Director - Submarines, with functional support and guidance provided by the Communications Business Partner, Devonport.

You will be will be focused on project/ programme stakeholders, be of a robust nature and well organised to meet competitive demands. You will be required to deliver effective and creative campaigns as well as developing a culture of openness and transparent two-way engagement.
In addition, this role currently acts as the interface for a particular submarine programme, with engagement required across all support functions and key operational areas to create a 'one team' culture.

Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential, with a proven ability to operate in complex environments, and to deadlines/within time restrictions. A crucial part of this role is also to develop and maintain effective working relationships with multiple stakeholders at all levels across Submarines South and its stakeholder groups.

You will take ownership of, sustain and evolve the internal communications and employee engagement strategy for Submarines South. Sustain and deliver Submarine South-wide communications and engagement plans. You will further develop links to communications and communication champions across the business and help build a culture where two-way internal communication is embedded as fundamental and integral to the success of the business unit. Continually evaluate the success of internal communications material and channels and gather employee feedback which can be measured against an engagement spectrum.
Oversee the development and implementation of an effective communications plan to drive employee engagement in SHE (Safety Health and Environment) and Quality initiatives

What do I need to do the role?
You will be skilled in researching and writing engaging copy, optimised for use across a variety of communications channels, including websites, newsletters and printed formats.

  • Proven track record of developing and sustaining communication plans and be able to demonstrate how they interface and support business strategies
  • Experience in designing, implementing and delivering employee engagement programmes
  • A comprehensive understanding of project management concepts, principles and techniques
  • A competent and confident communicator with the ability to build effective working relationships across the business
  • Demonstrable experience in creating positive relationships with stakeholders through appropriate management of their expectations and agreed objectives

You will need a minimum of 5 GCSE's or equivalent at grade C or above including English it is desirable if you are educated to degree level or equivalent in an appropriate discipline

What else do I need to know?
  • The successful candidate will need to satisfy Ministry of Defence security requirements. This may require you to hold or be eligible/capable of achieving 'Security Check' (SC) clearance.
