We are looking for an Embedded Software Engineer to join Airbus Defence and Space in Portsmouth. You will join our Modem team within the UK Delivery group and report to the Head of Modem System Engineering.
The Modem team Product Group is undertaking the design and implementation of a series of satellite communications Software Defined Radio (SDR) modem systems for Government and Military use. You will be part of a small multi-disciplinary team containing system, software, firmware and infrastructure engineers. There will be scope in the future to work on further Government, Military or Commercial modems as project needs arise.
You will research and develop aspects of modem products and associated communications systems, using your experience in embedded/real-time software within complex defence systems.
You may not have a complete understanding of the engineering techniques and technical aspects of satellite modem systems, but we'll be happy to teach you through a combination of working with our existing team and by training.
You will need to be eligible able to gain UK SC Security Clearance to undertake the role.
Tasks and Accountabilities
- Developing the real-time software aspects of satellite modem products based on Software Defined Radio (SDR) technologies.

- Definition, implementation, verification and validation activities associated with these solutions.

- Work in response to requirements, defining sub-systems, communicating risk and specifying test and verification techniques.

- Occasionally diagnose hardware, firmware and software problems in the laboratory prototyping environment.

- Develop and maintain modem skills to support on-going and future modem development.


Your role could involve very occasional travel within the UK and worldwide.

Required Skills
- Soft Real Time embedded C/C++ software implementation on Linux and bare-metal platforms

- Firmware interfacing (PCI bus, programmed I/O and DMA) expertise

- Practical experience of ARM and Zynq System-on-Chip platforms (e.g. APSoC, MPSoc and/or RFSoC)

- Knowledge and application of SysML, MATLAB/Simulink , Eclipse, GNU/Linux toolsets

- Any experience working in an Agile or Scrum environment would be beneficial
