Job Details

What if you could work with remarkable people on extraordinary things? What if the end result was something a little bit special? What if your role was mission critical?

For nearly 70 years, AWE has been at the forefront of nuclear weapons research and development. We have a critical mission: to provide the warheads for the UK's ultimate deterrent - Trident. We also use our unique skills to provide wider UK government with counter-terrorism and nuclear threat reduction solutions.

It takes a special sort of person to work at AWE. What if that person was you?

AWE is currently recruiting for a physicist or mathematician with simulation experience for the Thermomechanical Effects Team (B2/C1 grade)

This role is ideally suited to a physicist, mathematician or engineer who enjoys the challenge of performing complex computer simulations with commercial and bespoke finite element codes and the development of high quality material models from test data for the physics domain of interest.

Working within the Radiation Science Group the successful candidate will have responsibility for development of materials models and simulations to predict the response of materials and components within high fluence radiation environments.

You will develop and run computer simulations of various sub-components using advanced computational tools and platforms. You will use the results of the analysis to support both qualification assessments and our experimental programme to ensure the right data is gathered to progress the maturity of the models we use.

Experience in some of the following disciplines would be desirable, but is not essential:

  • Finite Element Analysis codes such as Abaqus, Ansys, LS-Dyna and knowledge of the finite element method.
  • Linux/HPC computer environments.
  • Shock physics and use/implementation of equation of state material models.
  • Programming language such as Python or C++
  • A firm grounding in Solid state physics
  • An understanding of how radiation interacts with matter.

A successful candidate will have the ability to work calmly and constructively in a pressurised priority changing environment and be able to manage their own workload. You will also have initiative, enthusiasm, a flexible approach and ability to work to tight deadlines.

You will have a strong degree in Physics, Maths or a related subject with a focus on computer simulation. Postgraduate degrees such as MPhys, MSc, MEng, and PhD would also be welcome.

Please note that you must be a British National to apply for a role at AWE.

AWE plays a crucial role in the defence of the United Kingdom, by providing and maintaining the warheads for the country's nuclear deterrent. We are a centre of scientific, engineering and technological excellence, with some of the most advanced research, design and production facilities in the world. Our unique expertise also assists the UK Government in developing and delivering a range of innovative and integrated support services, including national nuclear security and counter-terrorism solutions.

AWE is an equal opportunities employer. We value diversity and welcome applications from candidates from all backgrounds. We particularly welcome applications from sections of the community which are currently under-represented at AWE, including women, BAME and people with disabilities.
