About the role
We're looking for a Project Cost Estimator / Analyst (Functional Estimator) to join us at HMNB Devonport, one of the largest naval bases in Western Europe. We are proud to be the UK's leading submarine support provider. We are entrusted with the upkeep and deep maintenance of our Nation's submarines, which have been compared to the space shuttle in terms of complexity, and are one of the most challenging engineering projects undertaken in the UK.

Whilst we continue to provide the Royal Navy with safe, highly capable Vanguard and Trafalgar classes of submarine, we are also preparing for the future. The Astute class represents the largest, most advanced and most powerful attack submarines ever operated by the Royal Navy. This is a great time to be part of our team, with the new challenges and a significant increase in our future workload this new class will bring. This is critical work that requires the very best people.

As a Project Cost Estimator / Analyst (Functional Estimator) you will be part of a Business Support team that is integral to the success of our submarines business. You'll be responsible for the production of multi-disciplined Labour estimates from Work Specification, Drawings and Site visits, for Submarine Bids and for Extra, Additional and Emergent work during the Project Execution Phase. You'll be supporting the Project Manager throughout the project life-cycle by providing timely data analysis to support management information and decision-making.

What do I need to do the role?
You'll hold a minimum of ONC in an Engineering, Economics, Mathematical or Business discipline. Previous experience of Cost Estimating, Cost and Data Analysis and Cost Assurance is advantageous but not essential.

We would also like you to have some or all of the following:
  • APM PMQ or equivalent qualification
  • Ability to formulate costs and relate these to actual events across trades
  • Ability to interpret written engineering specifications/ technical drawings would be preferred but not essential.
  • A sound understanding of the project environment would be an advantage.
  • Methodical and thorough mind-set with a demonstrable analytical approach to problem-solving.
  • Proficient in IT / Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel Spreadsheets and Word.
Lastly, you'll be a good team player; enthusiastic and willing to help others and share knowledge. You'll have excellent organisation and interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively (both verbally and in writing) with project teams and people at all levels of the business.

What else do I need to know?
The successful candidate will need to satisfy Ministry of Defence security requirements. This may require you to hold or be eligible/capable of achieving 'Security Check' (SC) clearance.

Babcock offers a supportive environment including: enhanced employment terms and conditions, money purchase pension scheme with life assurance, share ownership scheme, Occupational Health services, career opportunities and specialist advice and guidance from our Learning & Development teams.
