About the role


Here at Babcock, our Emergency Services and Training Division employees highly-skilled people and supports the UK's emergency service customers across Avon, Devon, Somerset, Gloucestershire, South Wales and London. Our experience draws on a range of services including vehicle engineering, fleet management and delivering bespoke training solutions. We support customers by managing and protecting complex fleets of specialist vehicles and equipment. Therefore, we are trusted to deliver to emergency services customers including the Metropolitan Police Service.

We are currently recruiting a Vehicle Technician to support the Metropolitan Police by servicing and repairing vehicles in a safe and efficient manner using such skills and knowledge as is required. As the Vehicle Technician, you will prioritise vehicles and maintenance ensuring completion in accordance with procedures in operation and to the standard and quality required. You will ensure warranty claims are identified for recovery from manufacturers and rechargeable damage is identified and authorised.

Main Responsibilities:

  • To service, adjust and repair vehicles, components and accessories including removal and refitting in a safe, proper and economical manner using equipment provided
  • To diagnose faults and test vehicles utilising equipment available and using recognised test procedures and techniques. This will include road testing where deemed necessary. To drive in a manner within the parameters of the law and ensuring that all police signs are covered appropriately
  • To observe, recognise and report on defects and/or symptoms of impending failure. Identification of recharge costs advising the Workshop Controller and correct completion of paperwork
  • To order from the parts department, all necessary replacement parts, ensuring that no parts are fitted to vehicles other than those required to complete the work
  • To interpret technical service information and data from manuals, bulletins and or computer files and data. Implement by applying correct techniques
  • To ensure at all times that equipment and tools are kept in a clean, safe condition and to report any shortages or damaged/faulty equipment the line manager

What do I need to do the role?

You will need City & Guilds 1 & 2 in Motor Vehicle Studies or equivalent NVQ levels 2 & 3. Proven experience in a Vehicle Technician role as a fully Qualified Technician. We would also like you to have a good level of industry knowledge and awareness, take pride in completion and presentation of work, and be computer literate.
You must hold a full UK Driving Licence to be considered for this position.

What else do I need to know?

You will work 45 hours per week Tuesday to Saturday with opportunity for overtime. Also, you must be able to achieve the appropriate level of Security Clearance.
