Design Engineer (Mechanical)
SF31698
Location - Devonport, Plymouth
Starting Salary: £36,525

About the role
We're looking for a Design Engineer (Mechanically bias) to join us at HMNB Devonport, one of the largest naval bases in Western Europe. We're a key strategic partner to our customers; the MOD and the Royal Navy. We ensure that the UK Royal Navy goes to sea safely by supporting them in Devonport and around the world, delivering complex ship and submarine sustainment programmes and applying our core strengths of technology and expertise to sustain critical and complex assets to help maintain national security.

You will join a growing team at our Devonport site. Within the Facilities Engineering Technical Authority you will provide engineering support and advice and undertake design activities relating to Mechanical Services across and within the dockyard facilities. This includes the maintenance and control of modifications to the design intent of mechanical systems and equipment across the Devonport Site, Devonport Nuclear Licensed Site and Ministry of Defence Authorised Site. You will be a core member of the Interdisciplinary Design Engineering team, delivering design solutions and technical authority responsibilities to the business.

Your primary focus will be maintaining and controlling modifications to, and deviations from, the design intent of nuclear implicated and non-nuclear mechanical systems and acting as the custodian of reference design documentation. You will develop knowledge in the field of Systems Engineering and work primarily with process plant and piping systems. You will be responsible for undertaking design activities from requirements capture, design development, implementation and close out, to through-life support, decommissioning and disposal. You will be focussed on ensuring compliance with Licence Conditions, statutory legislation and design codes/standards, producing design guidance, substantiation and analyses, and delivering against agreed budgets/timescales.

And as you're supporting our business, we'll be supporting you. So as well as offering competitive benefits, you will be given the appropriate training to fulfil your role and will have the opportunity to expand your skillset within the engineering industry. Continuing professional development is also encouraged and fully supported

What do I need to do the role?
You'll be educated to minimum HNC or equivalent in a relevant engineering discipline (essential).

We would also like you to have a proven background as a Design Engineer, with knowledge of mechanical services systems (HVAC, Domestic Water Services, Steam & Condensate, Industrial Gases etc.), technical substantiation, computer aided design and engineering, and demonstrable experience of having applied the whole Design Lifecycle.

What else do I need to know?
You will be required to work in radiologically controlled areas (training will be provided).
The successful candidate will need to satisfy Ministry of Defence security requirements. This will require you to hold or be eligible/capable of achieving 'Security Check' (SC) clearance.
Babcock offers a supportive environment including: enhanced employment terms and conditions, money purchase pension scheme with life assurance, share ownership scheme, Occupational Health services, flexible working hours (only non-industrials), career opportunities and specialist advice and guidance from our Learning & Development teams. Additional benefits may also apply for Management posts.
We are happy to talk about flexible working. Please ask about alternative patterns of work at interview
