The Opportunity
 
The Actuation Systems Centre of Excellence specialises in the design and development of actuation systems across MBDA’s product portfolio, to both national and international customers. Control of these systems is essential, with the opportunity for the successful candidate to design, develop, and deploy appropriate control strategies. Systems range from the relatively simple to technology leading, including:-
  • Aerodynamic Control Surface Actuation
  • Gimbal Systems
  • Reaction control systems, including Thrust Vector Control (TVC) and Divert Attitude and Control Systems (DACS)
  • Deployment mechanisms
 
What are we looking for?
 
Essential Skills:-
  • Experience in the design and development of control algorithms for embedded real-time systems.
  • Experienced in the use of MATLAB and Simulink environments for code generation.
  • Knowledge of electrical machines and drives.
  • Experience modelling mechanical and electronic systems/behaviours.
  • Ability to communicate and influence across a wide range of audiences, throughout the company hierarchy and external customers and suppliers.
 
Desirable Skills:-
  • Experience identifying suitable components for use within control systems.
  • Knowledge of position sensors, microprocessors and software development would be beneficial.

The Role
 
The successful candidate will own the design, development and proving of Actuation System control algorithms throughout the lifecycle of a product, from concept R&D through mainstream development and into production, ensuring that Customer performance requirements are successfully met.
 
Key responsibilities would include:-
  • Concept design, development, test and qualification of control algorithms for electromechanically actuated sub-systems.
  • Utilising MATLAB / Simulink environment to develop and deploy control algorithms to real-time embedded environments through code generation tools.
  • Verification and validation of models and actuation systems hardware, including generation of plans, specifications and reports.
  • Deriving design requirements from the sub-system performance requirements, including mechanical, electrical, electromechanical, electronics and software/firmware.
  • Identifying suitable electromechanical components (particularly motors and sensors), including development with external suppliers if required.

The servo control systems team is expanding with the continued expansion of the Actuation Systems group and the roll out of company-wide Centres of Excellence. The group is responsible for design and development of systems across all partner nations.
