Mechanical Design Engineer

My client is looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join their team based in Surrey. They specialise in the design of a range of Sensors and Systems for the Maritime, Marine Science, Water Environmental, Defence and Process Control Markets.

You will have the opportunity for significant and rapid career development by accepting an increasing level of overall responsibility for product design and project management that would not necessarily be available within a larger organisation.

You will be working closely with a team of technical staff, scientists, software, electronics and mechanical engineers, to produce innovative and cutting-edge scientific instrumentation for customers around the world; however no design can be manufactured and supported without the necessary technical documentation, so it is essential that any prospective candidate can show evidence of having produced component and assembly drawings to a recognised standard.

Mechanical Design Engineering requires enormous attention to detail: tolerances, safety factors, component specifications, materials selection, testing, build standard control; it also requires knowledge of components, suppliers and processes - we are looking for someone with an understanding and appreciation of the importance of all those areas.

Qualifications / Experience

Applicants should be degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent) and ideally have experience working as a design engineer in a high technology engineering environment, although due consideration will be given to any candidate who can demonstrate proven design ability and sound engineering knowledge.
Full UK driving license required.
You will be expected to demonstrate a sound and comprehensive knowledge of fundamental engineering principles, therefore at interview will be required to answer a number of simple questions designed to test your knowledge of the basics, your aptitude for design and your ability to problem solve.
The role of design engineer, on occasion, may also require product and customer support anywhere in the world and in challenging offshore locations - so a willingness to travel at short notice will be needed.
