Job Details

Do you have a background in physics, software, systems engineering or electronics?

Our armed forces face a challenging and fast changing threat landscape where modern threat weapon systems present a significant challenge to the survivability of UK platforms operating in hostile environments. Could you bring your scientific and engineering expertise to our talented and diverse team to develop new approaches and technologies to protect the UK’s military aircraft, ships and vehicles?

Are you looking for an opportunity to apply and learn new skills in exciting and challenging areas and work alongside experts from across government, industry, academia and the international community?

Do you love communicating and sharing ideas with others to develop innovative solutions to established challenges? If so, Electromagnetic Protection Group wants to hear from you.

Significant changes in the geopolitical landscape coupled with the emergence and proliferation of disruptive technologies is placing unprecedented pressure on our military capabilities. Electronic warfare is the critical enabler to almost all missions – ensuring Air, Land and Maritime platforms are not detected or targeted by guided weapon systems. The rapid evolution of weapon technology requires the UK to pull on a far wider range of specialisms than ever before to defeat them.

Job description

We passionately believe that science and technology is the key to redressing the balance and that the UK’s world-class defence scientists and engineers are critical to that future success. If you have the background, education, skills or experience in any of the following areas, then Electromagnetic Protection Group wants to hear from you.

• Systems engineering
• Simulation tools and methods (including analysis of results and data)
• Physics based Optical Modelling
• Electro-Optic technology
• Digital signal processing

On the job training will be provided but we are looking for individuals with strong technical and analytical skills and leadership ability. We use sophisticated software models, world-class electronics laboratories and dynamic trials to test our research concepts and engineering solutions. We look for innovative ways to gain the edge in research and application, whether by working with science and engineering colleagues in industry and across NATO or by embedding staff in UK military headquarters and command centres. Most of all, we recognise the unique skills and aspirations of our staff and are able to present them with an unparalleled range of opportunities to develop both the UK’s military capabilities and themselves.

• Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to deliver studies directed by project leads.
• Engage with military commands, industry, academia and international collaborators to understand the broader military objectives.

Field Test Engineer
• Interface with the technical lead to understand the current capability and the future strategy so you can lead the implementation phase.
• Work with UK MoD and industry partners to facilitate the upkeep and maintenance support to the capability.
• Develop your knowledge of specific systems under test, their repair and operation.
• Support and lead laboratory and field based experiments with the opportunity to work with national/international, industrial, academia and government communities.
• Be a key part in the development of the next generation of field trials capability.
