About the role

As the Principal Naval Architect you will provide effective leadership and engineering judgment for the Naval Architecture function within the WTA, providing support as required to the Complex Warship Support Enterprise (CWSE). You will work closely with the Class Output Management teams and the Service Provider, and directly support the Class Lead Engineer's.
The Principal Naval Architect will be responsible for interpreting customer requirements, implementing the naval architecture policy and approving the naval architecture outputs to fully optimise activities performed on complex platforms through informed analysis of the up-to-date material state for the Class.

Specifically, the WTA Principal Naval Architect will ensure the provision of technical support for all naval architecture matters for all classes managed by Babcock COM and the Surface Ship Support Alliance. The post holder will inform support decisions, define changes to the vessels, manage the naval architecture delegation and provide naval architecture and safety SQEP

As a warship support partner to the Royal Navy, Babcock is a provider of deep maintenance, in-service maintenance and operational support for complex warships. The Warships Technical Authority (WTA) is a multi-disciplined organisation within Warships Engineering, which provides support to the MoD across a range of technical, safety, environmental, and supportability disciplines. You will be working alongside other highly qualified and knowledgeable engineers to deliver design and technical capability providing through-life support of RN complex Warships, whilst providing technical support to the Warship growth programme, and readiness for the support of future platforms


What do I need to do the role?

Required Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Competences

Essential:
  • Experience in Naval Architecture and through life support of complex warships
  • Experience in technical problem solving
  • Experience in technical report writing
  • Competent verbal and written communication skills
Desirable:
  • Knowledge of surface ship support
  • Experience of Technical Authority roles and functions
  • Experience of engineering design processes
Qualifications
  • Degree qualified in Naval Architecture
  • CEng or IEng working towards gaining CEng accreditation

  • Location- This role is based at Devonport Royal Dockyard which is located in the vibrant city of Plymouth, Devon in the south west of England. Plymouth is a city with a long and proud military history and more than its fair share of heritage. There is something for everyone here; from a superb coastline if you are a water sports enthusiast or Dartmoor National Park if you enjoy hiking and climbing, or simply enjoy the fantastic scenery. For a great night out we have the historic Barbican area with its wide variety of bars, clubs and restaurants. We are happy to discuss relocation options if required.
  • Travel will be required to Bristol, Portsmouth, Faslane and Rosyth as needed on average 1-2 times per month.
