Recruitment is now open for the role of Police Staff Investigator (PSI). Applications are invited for 12 month fixed term roles. This is an excellent opportunity to start or continue your investigation career and make a real difference to communities across the West Midlands region.

The Role

As a PSI, you will interview the victims of crime either in their own home, at a police station convenient to them or over the telephone.  The crimes will be varied and would include incidents reported of criminal damage, assaults, burglary, harassment, domestic abuse and safeguarding, to name just a few.

You will obtain initial details from victims of crime and take formal statements from witnesses. If a crime has been committed then it is the responsibility of the PSI to record it appropriately and conduct a thorough investigation. You will be a key part of a diverse investigation team including police constables and detectives, focusing on bringing offenders to justice and protecting our communities from harm.

You will manage a portfolio of investigations; taking personal responsibility for your case load. Your investigations will include completing crime reports, conducting house to house enquires, taking statements from witnesses and locating and securing and preserving evidence (for example CCTV). You will also be responsible for assisting with the preparation of files for court.

You will face many challenges as no two days are the same. You need to think on your feet and be confident in making the right decisions. The roles currently exist within our Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), where you will be working on a range of different types of crime; and our Public Protection Unit (PPU) focusing on cases such as domestic abuse, incidents of child abuse and  sexual assault, safeguarding and sexual offences. Applicants should be prepared to work in any area of the force.

The Person

You do not need to be police officer to be a PSI. Full training will be given but any prior investigation skills would be an advantage. We are looking for people who are flexible, organised, self-motivated and most of all approachable. You will be required to offer support to victims of crime and be prepared to handle and diffuse situations of conflict. You will need a full driving licence, good I.T skills, be able to work on your own and also as part of a team. You should be prepared to travel to various locations across the West Midlands.

The post holder will be required to work a shift pattern covering 7 days a week to include evenings and weekends.

Salary

The starting salary for the role is circa £23,011 which includes an additional weekend working allowance.
