The nuclear industry changes constantly.

Join a regulator that’s one step ahead.

The challenge

Often in the public eye, the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) is a growing, rapidly evolving public corporation. Essentially, we’re responsible for shaping and delivering the regulation of nuclear safety and security across the UK. Join us and be part of a unique organisation that’s progressing as quickly as the industry it supports.

The role

Our Nuclear Security Inspectors represent ONR, ensuring compliance, raising safety and security standards and reassuring the public. An important part of this is making sure that organisations within the nuclear industry are governed with security in mind. For example, is there a development plan to deliver security leaders and experts in the future? As an Inspector focusing on Leadership & Management, you’ll check that security arrangements and governance are satisfactory at leadership level. You’ll be assessing security plans, inspecting arrangements at sites and investigating issues. Plus, you’ll have the chance to travel, work with a wide range of people and deal with Government, law enforcement, international bodies and other regulators.

Life at ONR

This is a field that’s advancing fast and we need to keep pace with progress. That’s why you can expect to work with new, state of the art IT systems in a modern office environment. We’re investing in the organisation to ensure we remain a world-class regulator. To help our team to perform at their best, we provide expert training, which continues throughout your career. With flexibility and work-life balance too, you can enjoy life in one of our three attractive locations.

The person

We’re looking for experience in security risk analysis and management, including defining and developing organisational governance and oversight arrangements. This should be based on a degree-level qualification in a Security -related discipline along with further a qualification in Leadership & Management.   With this background, you’ll be capable of performing audits, assurance activities and compliance inspections covering the security aspects of organisation’s management systems, their training and competence management regimes, and security culture programmes.

Your membership of a professional body such as the Register of Chartered Security Professional, the Security Institute or the Institute of Leadership & Management, means you’re up to date with best practice and industry trends.

While experience in the nuclear industry is certainly helpful, you may have worked in another high-hazard industry or within the security arena.  Along with sound technical knowledge, you’ll need advanced people skills. It’s vital that you can build partnerships, influence and work in collaboration with contacts to achieve the right results.

The rewards

We offer competitive salaries at the ONR, with this role attracting a salary of £51,937 - £61,284 (plus £4,052 London Weighting Allowance for London-based roles). Furthermore, you’ll be eligible for a substantial Civil Service Pension scheme (including ill-health retirement and lump sum family benefits). In addition, you’ll receive a generous holiday entitlement and we also offer flexible working arrangements.

About us

ONR is a Public Corporation with a Mission to ensure the highest standards of safety and security across all of the UK’s licensed nuclear sites. Our staff are drawn from a wider range of professional backgrounds in order to run a stand-alone business with specialist inspectors to deliver our core business including civil engineering, radiological protection, human factors, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, nuclear physics, safeguards, protective security and cyber security. And together they’re involved in everything from assessing safety cases, inspecting nuclear sites, communicating our decisions, training new recruits and representing the UK and ONR within the wider international nuclear community.
