About us

The City of London is home to world-famous attractions, global businesses and many thousands of residents. We also welcome millions of tourists, workers and visitors every year. As such, our unique policing area brings particular challenges quite unlike those found anywhere else in the UK.

The role

In this new post, you’ll work with the Chairman of the Police Authority Board and Policy Manager to oversee police complaint reviews (appeals) made against the City of London Police by members of the public. Appeals like this occur when members of the public are dissatisfied with the way a police complaint has been handled by the police force.

Working with the Professional Standards and Integrity Committee, you’ll supervise such appeals, making sure they are handled correctly and in line with current legislation. As the Police Authority Lead, you will liaise with the Police Professional Standards Directorate, reviewing complaints, carrying out any necessary research and analysis before providing recommendations.

You’ll also manage Freedom of Information (FOI) requests from the public, collate information, prepare responses within statutory deadlines and make sure everything complies with GDPR.

As well as this, you’ll manage the Police Authority Independent Custody Visitor Scheme, where you’ll recruit, advise and support volunteers and assist with problems that might arise from this scheme which upholds the treatment of detainees.

About you

It’s likely you have a degree with a research or data-intensive element to it as well as relevant experience in responding to FOI and Subject Access Requests (SAR). . You’ll already have worked in an advisory or similar environment for a complex, member-led organisation like ours. On top of this, you’ll bring:

  • experience in areas of policing and community safety
  • knowledge of the police authority function
  • detailed, up-to-date knowledge of the Freedom of Information Act and GDPR
  • a good knowledge of the police complaints and appeals process
  • an understanding of police misconduct and complaints legislation in relation to police authority work
  • proficiency in IT systems, particularly Microsoft Office

The successful candidate will have to undergo pre-employment Police Vetting.

Closing date: 12 noon, 3 October 2019.

Interview dates scheduled for: 30 and 31 October 2019.

The City of London Corporation is committed to Equal Opportunities and welcomes applications from all sections of the community
