The Ministry of Defence (MOD) offers a progressive career path. Tasked with protecting British people, assets and borders, our work takes us the length and breadth of the globe. At the heart of this challenge is Joint Forces Command (JFC), a dynamic team who support overseas defence operations and all joint functions that span the three armed forces and civilian personnel. Based in Northwood, JFC provide the backbone for the successful delivery of all frontline operations and ensure we are prepared for whatever the future holds – and it is here that you could play an important part in ensuring national security.

To deliver against the Defence purpose and strategic objectives, we need the right mix of capable and motivated people that appropriately represent the breath of the society we exist to defend, now and in the future. In support of this vision, Joint Force Command reflects a whole force approach, bringing together military, civilians and contractors to deliver key outputs and enhance our strategic capabilities.  To drive the development of an empowered, productive and fulfilled workforce, the Joint Forces Command People Strategy was launched in 2019. An ambitious set of strategic objectives include a commitment to building leadership and management capability, shaping and delivering a sustainable, agile organisation for the future and promoting a diverse and inclusive workforce.

Working as part of the People and Change Programme team, the role holder will support the project management and delivery of the Joint Forces Command People Strategy, helping to draw together a robust, realistic yet ambitious delivery plan, an agreed set of success indicators and benefit metrics and associated risk and performance measures. They will support the programme of work to ensure that we deliver on our commitments on time and drive engagement across interdependent and enabling functions.

As part of the role, you will support the development of a robust programme plan for the JFC People Strategy with agreed milestones, interdependencies, enablers, risk and a robust set of benefit metrics against which delivery will be tracked.  In addition, you will develop governance framework through which to track the delivery of the JFC People Strategy and providing secretariat duties accordingly.

Supporting the development of a change programme report showing key workforce dependencies across the Command and supporting the provision of partnering to the business on the delivery of large-scale workforce change programmes will also be part of the role and you will draw on your relationship building skills to achieve these outcomes.

Communication skills are also crucial as you will design and develop a communications plan for the Joint Forces Command People Strategy which provides strategic updates on design and delivery to line managers, senior leaders and the wider department.  You will also act as the business continuity lead across the Strategic Workforce Team portfolio.

The team at Northwood enjoy a unique working life due to the vibrant campus-type environment. Our friendly community of civilian and military colleagues have access to exceptional onsite facilities including restaurants and a leisure centre that features a swimming pool, well-equipped gym and exercises classes. The work we are doing is ground-breaking, so you will be encouraged to learn about the work of other teams, with the freedom to attend lectures on topics such as the future of pilotless helicopters and developments in the field of cyber security. You will also benefit from:

  • A £3,000 Northwood allowance, paid in monthly instalments.
  • A good work/life balance supported by an onsite creche and the freedom to work flexible hours. This includes the opportunity to work from home depending on business needs.
  • The chance to opt into the desirable civil service pension scheme.
  • Plenty of training and development opportunities. Specifically, we have training programmes for CIPD.
  • Access to The Mess, which provides the focal point for many social activities. Sports clubs and family fun-days are also regularly organised.
  • Free staff parking, and a shuttle bus which runs to and from Moor Park station on the Metropolitan line.
