We are looking for a person with recent experience of a senior leadership role in the UK research sector, with an excellent understanding of its priorities and concerns, and some appreciation of the role of technology in research and research management, and a good network of contacts.

This is a high-profile opportunity for someone with a rich understanding of academic research and experience and insight at senior leadership levels within the research sector. They will thrive on the opportunity to influence thinking in the research sector, can inspire through effective public speaking and thought leadership articles and be a key voice in the research community. Through their influence and extensive relationships within the community and with bodies such Royal Society, UKRI and Research England, they will raise our visibility.

The role would be for approximately 3 days per week (on an initial 6-month contract), and would comprise:

*advising the client on its engagement activities with government and senior leaders in the research sector, in particular on positioning and messaging
*supporting the client, articulate a clear description of how its current and expected activities make a strategic contribution to the UK research base, against sector priorities
*leading or participating in discussions with sector leaders to explore the role of new technologies such as machine learning, internet of things, ubiquitous 5G and robotics in research
*maintaining positive relationships for Jisc at all levels across the research community and with associated bodies
*representing the client at relevant research events and supporting the development and chairing of roundtable events
*providing market intelligence and analysis
*writing thought leadership articles
*engaging within the client to support improve understanding about the research sector
*engaging with researchers across disciplines to determine their future needs
*supporting refinement of the research sector strategy, for example advising on how the client should better support the sector address challenges such as the industrial strategy, environmental issues, UK regional development, and international collaboration.
*initiating / supporting specific conversations with sector leadership (for example on research indicators and associated data infrastructure/ analytic services with Research England and the Forum for Responsible Research Metrics)
*supporting new projects - such as service development - for the research sector by providing relevant introductions, insight on the right vocabulary and arguments to position projects clearly within priority sector strategies (example topics - cloud, open science, AI)
