Role Summary/Purpose:
    Avionics Systems Technical Managers are responsible for providing avionics systems expertise and driving technical excellence across the systems engineering life-cycle. They will be responsible to the Avionics Systems Engineering Leader for developing the appropriate capability across the department and delivering systems engineering capability into projects.
Essential Responsibilities:
    A systems engineering Technical Manager will be accountable for the below:
  • Delivering whole life-cycle Systems Engineering activities within projects
  • Providing expert, advice, support and accountable for acquiring qualified personnel, supporting individual growth and development including training & mentoring, driving best practice
  • Accountable to Engineering Project Managers to assign capable personnel to meet program demand
  • Identifying opportunities for productivity and cost improvements in the projects they support and the capability area they are responsible for
  • Engaging with other Systems Engineering leaders to ensure whole-life cycle activities are considered within their area of responsibility
  • Accountable for ensuring their team performs within the constraints (scope / schedule / cost / technical / risk / quality) of their assignment
  • Ensuring the appropriate training, development tools and processes are available and employed across the department to maintain the required skill levels to satisfy their assigned capability
  • Act as the first point of escalation outside of the projects for Systems Engineering issues related to their assigned projects
  • Owning and supporting Systems Engineering inputs to business development activities to ensure appropriate scope, opportunities and risks are identified and accounted for
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships and engagement with the Chief Engineers Office and other Subject Matter Experts essential to their capability area of expertise
  • Ensuring Systems Engineering staff are applying strict adherence to process compliance, regulation, and other GE policies
  • Direct management and personal/professional development of a team of Systems Engineers
Qualifications/Requirements:
  • A recognised technology based degree, supported by sufficient experience to prove application of Systems Engineering across the life-cycle or equivalent experience
  • A proven track record in leading technical activity in complex avionics/electronics projects
  • Expert in Systems Engineering , and sound knowledge of Software and Electronics within Aerospace
  • The ability to influence across all levels and functions within a multi-discipline matrix environment
  • Display a passion for technology and aviation
  • Strong decision maker and influencer, with excellent communication skills
  • Extensive experience of managing people in a Technical environment, setting the personal standards for others to follow. Dealing with any personal issues that arise within the designated Team of Systems Engineers and seeking specialist advice and help when issues identified.
  • Coaching and Mentoring of all allocated Systems team members and peers alike.

Desired Characteristics:
    Knowledge of the following:
  • Configuration management and control.
  • Resource Management.
  • Lean & Six Sigma Methodologies.
  • Formal management training with effective team building skills.Ability to manage remote and/or virtual teams.Understanding of regulatory and safety requirements for safety critical products (ideally gained in an avionics or similar environment).A good understanding of project management techniques for new product introduction within an engineering environment.Experience of Design for Manufacture.
