About us:

Applications are invited for the post of Financial Accountant.

The College of Policing was established in 2012 as the professional body for everyone who works for the police service across England and Wales. Its purpose is to support everyone working in policing to reduce crime and keep people safe. Working in the finance team within the College offers a unique opportunity to blend the benefits of working in a central government organisation with such an important purpose, but one that also has a significant commercial outlook. The Finance team plays a key role in influencing College strategy and facilitating its success. This will only continue to grow in the future, with the continuing the need to ensure value for money for the tax payer.

Working as part of a 19 (FTE) finance team and reporting into the Financial Controller, this hands-on position is a great opportunity for you to structure your own role whilst helping to shape and develop a strong financial culture within the college. The role is central to the production of the College's draft financial statements and other key aspects of the Annual Report and Accounts, liaise with other areas of the business to obtain and collate content, and co-ordinate the external audit. To act as the main contact with the Auditors and ensure that a strong working relationship is built. Ensure that the College's non-current assets are recorded accurately, and that Finance Business Partners have the sufficient information and knowledge to enable effective financial decision making throughout the College.

In applying for this position, it is essential that you are a part or fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CIPFA). The role has broad responsibilities enabling the financial accountant to get out into the business, building relationships across the finance and non-finance teams. As a key player in the finance team, working with the Financial Controller to deliver statutory accounts and leading on the annual audit and will manage a high performing Assistant Accountant. You will need excellent stakeholder management skills, the ability to persuade and influence senior stakeholders with confidence. Experience of working to UK government or wider public sector accounting and regulatory requirements would be an advantage but not essential.

Additional information and eligibility:

New entrants are normally appointed at the pay scale minimum for their grade although there is some scope for negotiation based on skills and experience.

Existing staff should note that, if successful, their salary on appointment would normally be determined by applying the College's usual salary progression rules. If the appointment is on level transfer, your substantive salary (excluding any allowances) will remain unchanged (unless it exceeds the maximum stated within the College pay band) and unless the successful candidate's current salary is below the relevant College grade minimum. If the appointment is on temporary or substantive promotion, the successful candidate's salary will be increased by the appropriate promotion percentage or moved to the relevant College grade minimum, whichever is the greater.

This post is open to UK nationals, Commonwealth citizens, EEA nationals of other member states and certain non-EEA family members. There must be no employment restriction or time limit on your permitted stay in the UK. You should normally have been resident in the United Kingdom for at least three years, and in some cases five or even 10 years, preceding your application due to the requirement to have a checkable history for security vetting purposes. If you answer 'No' to the questions regarding nationality, then it is unlikely your application will be pursued. If you are unsure as to your eligibility on any of these points, please contact us for advice.

College posts are subject to both national security vetting and force vetting requirements.
