Western Europe's largest naval base For more than three hundred years, engineers have been shaping the dockyard to ensure it supports the fleet and protects the nation. We need you to help continue this tradition, transforming, sustaining and improving Devonport to meet the demands of the Royal Navy for the next hundred years.
 
Comprising of 14 dry docks, four miles of waterfront and 25 tidal berths, Devonport is the base for numerous surface vessels as well as the base and refit centre for the Trafalgar-class nuclear-powered submarines. Devonport has also recently been selected as the base port for the Navy's new Type 26 frigates and will become the maintenance centre for the future submarine programme, including Astute and Dreadnought class.
 
Your role in Babcock As a Safety Engineer, you will be the first port-of-call for the business in relation to nuclear and radiological safety, including radiological protection and human factors. You will ensure compliance with the statutory legislation and requirements relevant to nuclear related activities carried out at Devonport and help maintain and develop associated safety cases.
 
We are looking for individuals to support both new-build infrastructure as well as projects relating to the development of existing dockyard and naval base assets.
 
Duties could include
  • Provide nuclear and radiological knowledge and support to the business.
  • Ensure compliance with statutory legislation and the terms of the site licence.
  • Deliver nuclear safety cases and licencing plans
  • Develop and implement nuclear safety processes and standards
  • Provide technical advice on nuclear safety assessment processes and policy
  Skills and qualifications
  • Qualified to degree level in a relevant engineering or scientific discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer or able to attain chartership status
  • Relevant safety experience is also beneficial but not essential, as training will be given.

Successful candidates will need to satisfy Ministry of Defence security requirements and may be required to complete a medical assessment.
 
The role will be in an environment regulated by Trade Control legislation and involve working with controlled goods, technology and/or services. This may require you to meet enhanced security and regular screening checks.

Business Area- Devonport
 
Babcock International Group owns and operates the main refit, maintenance and workshop area of the 330 acre naval site at Devonport, known as Devonport Royal Dockyard, where it employs thousands of people. The remainder of the site at Devonport is owned by the Ministry of Defence and is known as Her Majesty's Naval Base (HMNB) Devonport - one of the largest naval bases in Western Europe.
 
Babcock and the Ministry of Defence work in partnership to operate and maintain this co-located site by providing through-life support for submarines, surface ships and associated systems and equipment.
 
Babcock has a large design and technology capability providing a wide range of support activities including feasibility and project definition studies, detail design and draughting, development trials, noise and vibration analysis, structural analysis, project management, integrated logistic support and risk management.
