The Role 

Security Service Group (SSG) assists the MoD and the wider Government Estate in meeting its security requirements. 

Successful applicants will join a team described by industry auditors as “hard working and talented individuals – among the best in the business.” The role of an SSG field technician offers the successful applicant the chance to work on a variety of technically advanced projects protecting some of the nation’s most important assets. 

The position advertised will provide support in relation to the installation and maintenance of security systems, whilst ensuring that a professional, efficient and cost-effective service is delivered to customers. 

Successful applicants will be tasked from home, predominantly working on SSG customers sites throughout the South West Region. 

You will be provided with a company vehicle and have the choice of a vehicle with private use which will be eligible for taxable benefit, or a van for business use only which will be tax exempt. You will be included on the roster for ‘out of hours’ calls for which you will receive a call out allowance (including recall to duty allowance when called out). Daily travel time payments are made if journeys meet certain criteria. 

This role may require the successful applicant to work away from home at times providing support to the other SSG teams that work in other regions of the country & staying in overnight accommodation as required. 

Main Responsibilities 

To understand and be competent to work safely on the installation and maintenance of a wide range of security systems including: 
• Intruder Alarm Systems 
• External & Perimeter Intruder Detection Systems 
• CCTV Systems 
• Automatic Access Control Systems 
• Control Room IAS, CCTV & AACS Standard Monitoring Systems 
• Act as focal point on site with day to day liaison with customer. 
• Accurately estimate all materials and labour needed for minor works, additions and alterations. 
• Order materials from suppliers and provide equipment lists to Project Manager as appropriate. 
• Provide technical assistance at all levels, create solutions to technical problems including designs. Undertake trade supervision as required 
• To participate in on-call rota, to undertake all job-related administration in an accurate and timely way. 
• Full functional training will be provided for certain systems to suit the business need. 

Travel Requirements 

SSG’S regional office is based in Shrivenham. Work is predominately at SSG Customer’s sites in the South West geographic region and depending on the successful applicant’s home locations this may involve regular and frequent periods of detached duty. In addition, the post holder may be required to provide support to other SSG regions as necessary and therefore have periods of detached duty in the UK and possibly overseas.

SSG is a business unit of the MOD with over 200 staff located throughout the UK and overseas responsible for the design, installation and maintenance of security systems across the MOD and government estate. 

Working within SSG’s Operations Team you will be part of a dedicated group of MOD Security Engineers providing key specialist installation and maintenance services, delivering MOD’s highest level of electronic security systems to protect the Nation’s assets.

Person specification

• Relevant engineering background / knowledge of electronic security system installations: 
Intruder Detection Systems, Perimeter Intruder Detection Systems, CCTV Systems and Access Control Systems 
• A working knowledge of installing or maintaining data / IP networks 
• Knowledge of telecom system installations

Licences

Full UK Driving Licence

Qualifications

• Relevant Engineering Apprenticeship 
OR 
• ONC/OND OR NVQ/SVQ Level 3 in Electronic Security Systems (IDS, CCTV, etc)
